Project Development Environmental Specialist

Project Development Environmental Specialist – Vestas Development

About the Role Vestas Development is a strategic business unit within Vestas, focused on creating new growth opportunities while supporting the wider Vestas business. The team is responsible for originating, developing, and optimising wind and hybrid renewable energy projects globally, using both in-house development capabilities and partnerships managed by the group.

The Project Development Environmental Specialist will be part of Vestas Development’s UK and Ireland team, reporting to the Head of Vestas Development (UK & Ireland). Located in Dublin (Ireland) or Warrington, London, or Edinburgh (UK), this role involves:

  • Contributing to the origination, development, and delivery of onshore wind projects
  • Acting as a trusted environmental advisor to internal teams and external development partners

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and consenting of renewable energy projects across UK and Ireland, with responsibility for:

    • Environmental assessments, EIA coordination, consultant management, environmental risk management, stakeholder engagement, and post-consent compliance support
  • Oversee and coordinate environmental deliverables for onshore wind projects, including:

    • Feasibility studies, due diligence, EIAs, Environmental Statements, scoping workshops, baseline investigations, appendix drafting, and consent submissions
    • Management of specialist inputs across:
      • Ecology
      • Ornithology
      • Hydrology
      • Peatlands
      • Landscape & visual impact
      • Noise
      • Cultural heritage
      • Air quality
      • Transport
  • Provide environmental advice for:

    • Site selection and design evolution
    • Consenting strategies
    • Risk management (including survey findings, sensitive receptors, and planning policy considerations)
    • Regulatory compliance (consultations and consent conditions)
  • Collaborate with engineering, grid, land, legal, planning, stakeholder, and commercial teams to:

    • Embed environmental constraints into project design and delivery
    • Optimise consenting strategies, environmental programmes, risk registers, budgets, and procurement plans
  • Manage environmental consultants and technical specialists, ensuring timely, cost-effective, and high-quality outputs:

    • Support public consultations and stakeholder engagement, communicating technical matters to non-technical audiences
  • Support post-consent and pre-construction activities, including:

    • Discharge of planning conditions
    • Compliance with environmental commitments
    • Adherence to legislation, permits, and company procedures (HSE policies)
    • Conducting site visits, preparing environmental status reports
    • Contributing to community-focused communication strategies

  • Stay current with environmental legislation, planning policy, and renewable energy consenting requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Ecology, Planning, Geography, Renewable Energy, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
  • Five years’ relevant experience:
    • In environmental consultancy, renewable energy development, EIA coordination, large-scale infrastructure project consenting, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of UK or Irish planning and consenting processes, including:
    • Town and Country Planning, Section 36 (Scotland), National Policy Statements (NSIPs)/Developer Consent Orders (DCOs), Designated Nature Conservation (DNS) in Wales, and Irish planning systems.
  • Proven knowledge of:
    • EIA processes
    • Environmental legislation
    • Planning policy
    • Permitting systems
    • Regulatory frameworks, including:
      • Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA)
      • Protected sites and biodiversity
      • Mitigation design and environmental monitoring
      • Key environmental disciplines: ecology, ornithology, hydrology, peat, landscape/visual impact, noise, air quality, climate, water resource management, and archaeology.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient IT skills:
    • Microsoft Word & Excel
    • GIS capability (for site assessment, constraints mapping, and visualisation support).
  • Willingness to travel within the UK & Ireland as required.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Competencies

  • Analytical & methodological skills: Interpret complex environmental information, assess consultant deliverables, and provide clear recommendations.
  • Risk mitigation expertise: Understand environmental constraints on project design, planning strategy, and consenting risk—identifying risks early and proposing practical mitigation.
  • Project management proficiency:
    • Manage multidisciplinary teams, multiple workstreams, and competing priorities in renewable energy projects.
    • Coordinate deadlines, consultant packages, and budgets.
  • Organisational excellence: Maintain robust document control, records management, and quality assurance.
  • Relationship-building & collaboration: Work effectively with:
    • Internal teams
    • Stakeholders
    • Suppliers
    • Consultants
    • Regulatory bodies
  • Commercial awareness: Manage consultancy scopes, procurement, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Communication skills: Represent projects in meetings, consultations, and forums with:
    • Technical precision
    • Clarity for non-technical audiences.
    • A commitment to professional development and up-to-date industry knowledge.
