About Us
At National Grid, we light up the world by harnessing the unique strengths of our people. Join us as a Project Development Lead to be part of a team that's driving forward the energy transition, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for all. Unleash your superpower and bring energy to life.
This role is based out of Warwick, and we’d hope to see you in the office at least once a week. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you.
Job Purpose
As we build the projects that will make the energy transition happen, we’re looking for brilliant Project Development Leads to join us on our journey to develop the electricity network of the future. The energy world is changing, and we need to change with it. We're no longer just delivering safe, reliable energy for today, we're also building the energy systems we'll all rely on tomorrow. You’ll not only support the technical challenges of today, but also help shape the network that will decarbonise a nation and leave our planet in a state where future generations can thrive.
What You'll Do
- Lead the early-stage development of one or more large-scale projects, from initial concept through to assessing and identifying a preferred strategic option. This will include appraising technical, environmental, socio-economic, regulatory and other criteria.
- Communicate in a friendly, professional and collaborative way, simplifying complex information so it is clear, accessible and useful for stakeholders.
- Use a clear, logical thought process to quickly make sense of technically complex or unfamiliar projects, drawing out the key issues, insights and implications. Identify and collaborate with specialists across the business to ensure all relevant information is gathered and assessed to support the strategic option selection process.
- Manage the progress of projects in line with internal and external policies and regulations, ensuring delivery to cost, quality and time while employing robust risk management processes.
- Be responsible for development of the project business case.
- Foster a collaborative environment with stakeholders, building strong relationships internally and externally through excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
- Produce meaningful and accurate reports covering project need, scope, cost, delivery approach, key decisions, risks and assumptions.
- Translate complex issues into language that can be easily understood by colleagues and stakeholders without a technical background.
- Analyse interdependencies and synthesise multiple inputs to create clear, evidence-based recommendations.
- Engage with digital teams to identify and use technologies that improve the accuracy and efficiency of project development.
- Ensure all required project documentation is produced, governance is maintained, and lessons learned and best practice are consistently applied.
- Lead external consultants or internal specialists through activities such as environmental constraint mapping, technical design and schematics, and detailed cost and schedule estimation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
