Project Director
Project Director – Transportation Project Delivery (Strategic Highways & Local Transport) – Epsom
About the Role
The AtkinsRéalis Transportation Project Delivery Practice (PDP) is the industry-leading centre for delivering major transportation infrastructure projects, combining project management, design, and delivery expertise to support public and private sector clients across Strategic Rail, Strategic Highways, and Local Transport markets.
We are seeking established Project Directors in the Strategic Highways and Local Transport teams based at our Epsom office, to lead our portfolio of challenging and high-impact projects. This role offers career growth opportunities, regional accountability for delivery, and the chance to develop talent within a large, multidisciplinary project team.
Current success in the transportation sector, coupled with portfolio growth, has created exciting opportunities for experienced professionals who wish to:
- Take full accountability for project performance and delivery.
- Influence and grow the project management team at a regional level.
- Engage closely with leading clients (HS2, Highways England, Network Rail, and Local Authorities).
- Deliver projects on schedule, budget, and quality standards while adhering to key contracts, such as NEC3/4.
Telecommuting will be required, with occasional travel to client sites and offices.
Your Responsibilities
As Project Director, you will oversee all aspects of project delivery, including:

Full project accountability and assurance, ensuring:
- Safe and compliant project execution.
- Accurate progress reporting and timely reviews.
- Clear visualisation of project requirements, including scope, programme, cost, risk, and interfaces.

Bid phase leadership as Bid Director, ensuring competitive responses and successful tender submissions.

Client liaison as the primary point of contact, engaging at all stages of project development.

Recruitment and leadership of the delivery team, including appointment of:
- Project Managers and their monitoring for performance.
- Project Technical Lead and Project Technical Reviewer on technical areas.

Contract administration throughout the project lifecycle in alignment with ECC NEC (Engineering and Construction Contract) terms.

Commercial and risk management to ensure projects meet Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE), Technical Quality, Cost, and Schedule targets.

Requirements
To excel in this role, you will bring:
- 15+ years of multidisciplinary transportation infrastructure delivery experience, preferably in Highways & Local Transport, with expertise in design and contract administration.
- Proven leadership as a Project Director or Project Manager, with a strong track record in delivering complex (>£2M/year design revenue) projects.
- Qualifications (desirable but not mandatory)
- CEng MICE or equivalent engineering/design qualification.
- APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or equivalent.
- Technical & Contractual Knowledge
- Proficiency in NEC3/4 or bespoke construction contracts.
- Familiarity with UK highways standards and good working relations with Highways England/Principal Contractors.
- Strong Industry Experience
- Experience working with multi-disciplinary design teams.
- Strong client-facing skills, demonstrating alignment with client needs and bespoke contract terms.
- Management & Leadership
- Holds credibility within peers, clients, and senior teams and fosters a collaborative working ethos.
- Cultivates task accountability, maintaining project stability amid dynamic requirements.
- Ability to understand and drive business growth
- Proven ability to win bids, supported by excellent risk-aware, tactical, and commercial judgement.
- Adaptability to changeable conditions and preference for hybrid project environments.
- Desirable soft skills:
- Knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM).
- Current UK driving licence.
