Senior Project Director – Transportation Project Delivery Practice

About the Role

The AtkinsRéalis Transportation Project Delivery Practice (PDP) delivers Major Transportation infrastructure projects across Strategic Rail, Strategic Highways, and Local Transport Markets. Based in Epsom, this role offers experienced Project Directors the opportunity to drive delivery of a portfolio of projects, foster team growth, and take strategic leadership responsibility within the Highways and Local Transport sectors.

With a growing pipeline of work across the UK—including partnership with HS2, Highways England, Network Rail, Local Authorities, and Principal Contractors—this position provides the chance to ** expand career horizons** while maintaining deep industry expertise. The role may involve hybrid working, including client office and site attendance.

This is an exciting leadership role for established Project Directors looking to own and elevate project performance, mentor teams, and demonstrate excellence on challenging, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects.


Your Key Responsibilities

Delivery Accountability & Assurance

  • Ensure end-to-end project delivery—from inception to completion—meeting budget, schedule, and quality targets
  • Maintain project risk and opportunity management and mandatory governance reviews
  • Oversee proper project reporting, guaranteeing accuracy and prompt decision-making

Project Assurance & Compliance

  • Safeguarding delivery alignment with commercial contracts—particularly following ECC & NEC3/4 principles
  • Troubleshoot scope, cost, and programme deviations while preserving client relationships
  • Champion Health, Safety, Environmental, and Welfare (HSE&W) compliance across all projects

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Appoint and develop Project Managers, Technical Leads, and wider delivery teams—coaching and guiding high-performance project cultures
  • Foster collaboration and innovation within teams, ensuring model client engagement
  • Mentor emerging leaders while aligning corporate values (Safety, Integrity, Collaboration, Innovation)

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary interface for clients, contractors, and stakeholders, translating requirements into actionable plans
  • Support widening capacity in London & SE regions, observing demand generated by projects from current and new client partnerships
  • Drive win-win outcomes through proactive, bespoke service delivery strategies

Bidding & Commercial Acumen

  • Lead bid submissions in a high-value competitions environment, understanding challenging pricing frameworks
  • Balance cost efficiency and service delivery against client expectations

Who You Are

Experience & Expertise

✔ 15+ years in highways and/or local transport infrastructure projects ✔ Multi-disciplinary design project management experience (proven track record on projects exceeding £2M/year in fees) ✔ Command of contract administration, with deep understanding of **NEC and/or bespoke procurement models ✔ Hands-on Stakeholder & client management (preferably with NHS/E, Principal Contractors, and local authorities)

Key Technical & Soft Skills

✔ APM PMQ or equivalent qualification (desirable) ✔ CEng MICE (or comparable professional registration) (preferred) ✔ Expert Risk Assessment & Mitigation know-how for complex projects ✔ Business savvy: commercial foresight and margin optimisation coupled with clear bid strategy acumen ✔ Proven leadership in ambiguous but structured environments, with adaptable mindset ✔ Valid driving licence (for client/site visits)
