Project Director Opportunity
Referment are partnering with a leading Tier 1/2 contractor to appoint an experienced Project Director responsible for delivering complex, large-scale construction projects primarily across the South West, with additional opportunities for candidates based in London who are open to regional travel.
This role is site-based (5 days a week) and requires significant mobility. The Project Director will take full ownership of project delivery across safety, commercial performance, programme, quality, and people leadership, with a special focus on risk-bearing specialist contractor delivery.
The Opportunity
You will provide portfolio-level leadership and drive the successful self-delivery of technically challenging projects within the structures and reinforced concrete sector. This directorship role demands a leader capable of full commercial strategy leadership and end-to-end accountability for high-stakes infrastructure projects in a risk-bearing contractor environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Full profit and loss (P&L) responsibility and accountability for project delivery across:
- Safety
- Schedules/programmes
- Commercial performance
- Quality assurance
- Leading and developing multidisciplinary project teams within a self-delivery model
- Managing high-level client relationships while consistently exceeding expectations in complex, regulated environments
- Driving value engineering, buildability, and engineering excellence
- Overseeing project controls, reporting, and performance tracking at portfolio level
- Supporting pre-construction activities, including bid tendering and methodology development
- Ensuring commercial success, risk mitigation, and assurance across all projects

What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking candidates who:
- Are either based in the South West or London, or are fully open to relocating or travelling regularly to these regions for site-based delivery
- Come from a strong Tier 1 or Tier 2 risk-bearing specialist contractor background, with recent UK experience
- Possess a proven track record in self-delivery roles (an essential requirement)
- Demonstrate portfolio-level leadership with full commercial strategy ownership and P&L responsibility
- Have 6+ years’ experience in Project Management or a directorship within construction
- Deliver 3+ years’ senior leadership experience managing complex, regulated UK infrastructure projects with end-to-end accountability
- Have successfully delivered large-scale civil engineering or structural/concrete projects, with high client exposure
- Have experience working in regulated environments, such as Ministry of Defence (MOD) facilities, and understand their associated challenges
- Display career stability with a clear focus on contractor-side delivery
