Project Engineer – Digital Machining

Location: The University of Sheffield (AMRC partners) Position Type: Full-time Grade: 6 Salary: £32,080 - £36,636 per annum (potential progression to £39,906)

The University of Sheffield, recognised for its world-class research and inclusive culture, invites applications for a Project Engineer role within the Digital Machining team at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). Join us to drive innovation in subtractive process modelling, bridging simulation, experimentation, and data analysis for process optimisation in advanced manufacturing.

About the Role

The Digital Machining team welcomes a fast-learning, research-driven individual with a passion for cutting-edge technology, experimental validation, and data-driven decision-making. This role bridges the gap between modelling, simulation, and hands-on testing, ensuring novel subtractive processes are researched, optimised, and translated into practical demonstrations.

You’ll collaborate with industrial partners, PIs, and technical teams to:

  • Define and assess subtractive machining modelling solutions for optimisation.
  • Manufacture demonstration components showcasing emerging and partner-developed technologies.
  • Support research targets in industrial connectivity, data-driven AI/ML applications, and digital process improvement.

No IoT mentor experience? No problem. We prioritise curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn—success comes from project management aptitude, quality adherence, and embracing technical growth.

Occasional travel may be required (mainly within the UK, with potential international trips). This role has direct sector linkages with defence.

Are you ready to push bounds in research and experience impactful advancements? Apply today!

  • Script and adapt MATLAB/Python tools for data-driven and physics-based modelling.
  • Collaborate in developing next-gen CAD, simulation scripts, and data pipelines.
  • Conduct experimental testing, post-processing analyses, and statistical assessments.
  • Draft technical reports summarising research findings, refining future directions.

Project Execution & Collaboration

  • Ensure preparing materials/tooling and equipment set-up align with research goals.
  • Preserve experimental fidelity while documenting outputs and deliverables.
  • Present findings confidently to internal/external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Partner with shop floor staff to refine workflows and manufacturing demonstrations.
  • Proactively track progress, escalate issues, and align with project milestones.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
