About The Role

As part of this strategic growth, STRABAG UK Water is seeking an experienced and ambitious Mechanical Project Engineer to join its expanding team. The role will initially support delivery across major water and wastewater infrastructure programmes.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on some of the most significant water infrastructure projects in the UK and Ireland, taking ownership of Mechanical packages from concept through to commissioning and handover. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Lead and coordinate mechanical design activities with in-house design teams, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure all Mechanical designs comply with client specifications, applicable regulations, industry standards, and project requirements.
  • Review, challenge, and approve mechanical design deliverables, calculations, drawings, and technical submissions.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring robust and innovative engineering solutions are developed.
  • Support value engineering initiatives to optimise technical performance, programme delivery, and project cost efficiency.
  • Mechanical interface, coordination and collaboration with STRABAG global technical centre engineering team WTE/ 4K in Essen ensuring design are aligned with UK & Irland standards & specifications for the UK water sector
  • Ensure Mechanical integration requirements are considered throughout design development and construction phases.
  • Take ownership of electrical and ICA work packages from design through procurement, installation, commissioning, and handover.
  • Manage package delivery against programme milestones, budgets, contractual obligations, and quality requirements.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks and opportunities, and implement mitigation measures to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Report package performance, risks, and progress to the Project Manager and or Project Director.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project programmes and delivery strategies.
  • Champion STRABAG's commitment to health, safety, environmental, and quality excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with BS standards, WIMES relevant UK and Irish legislation, and client-specific standards.
  • Review and provide technical assurance for RAMS, permits, commissioning documentation.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across project teams and supply chain partners.
  • Support incident investigations, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives where required.
  • Support the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical and ICA systems.
  • Coordinate FATs, SATs, integrated system testing, commissioning activities, and handover processes.
  • Ensure operational and maintenance considerations are incorporated into system design and delivery.
  • Work closely with procurement teams to develop and manage procurement strategies for installation packages. Above ground pipe work, pumps, Valves, kiosk, and package plant
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, tender documentation, and supplier evaluations.
  • Assess supplier proposals and provide technical assurance on equipment selection, compliance, and value.
  • Manage supplier and subcontractor performance throughout design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning phases.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with supply-chain partners to drive quality and delivery excellence.
  • Act as a key technical interface with client representatives, Mechanical engineers, regulatory stakeholders, and delivery partners.
  • Build strong working relationships to facilitate efficient decision-making and package progression.
  • Attend design reviews, technical workshops, progress meetings, and client presentations.
  • Support the resolution of technical queries, change requests, and contractual matters.
  • Work collaboratively with civil, electrical, process, and commissioning engineers to manage interfaces across all project disciplines.
  • Ensure Mechanical requirements are understood and incorporated throughout design development and construction planning.
  • Coordinate design integration activities to minimise clashes, programme delays, and construction risks.
  • Support BIM and digital engineering initiatives where applicable.
  • Ensure Mechanical installations are delivered in accordance with approved designs, specifications, quality standards, and industry best practice.
  • Witness installation, testing, and commissioning activities to verify compliance and performance.
  • Review inspection and test plans, commissioning procedures, and handover documentation.
  • Support operational readiness, client acceptance, and project close-out activities

  • Degree or Higher National qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Promote collaboration across business units and the wider STRABAG Group.
  • Experience of working in waste & clean water project in the UK & Irland
  • Good understanding of WIMES specifications and standards
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with water clients, consultants, and supply-chain partners.
  • Capture and communicate client insight to improve service offerings and overall performance.
  • Solid understanding of construction practices and standards.
  • Specialist knowledge of the Water Industry and understanding of engineering disciplines
  • Support and build relationships with wider elements of the company, to make best use of STRABAG’s wider sector experience in Germany Austria and worldwide.
