Work Environment
- Location: Yorkshire Region (Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Hull)
- Hybrid role: Remote working (2–3 days/week) with regular travel to Yorkshire Water sites & offices
- Hours: 37 hours/week (Mon–Fri), permanent position
About the Role
We provide 5.4 million people in Yorkshire clean, safe drinking water and reliable wastewater services, while protecting communities and the environment.
As a Project Engineer in our Engineering Team, you’ll play a key role in delivering projects that align with regulatory compliance, sustainability goals, and customer expectations. The team oversees Instrumentation, Control Systems, and Automation (ICA) across the entire lifecycle—ensuring assets remain safe, compliant, and resilient.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, deploy, and test business-critical ICA services, including:
- Instrumentation systems
- PLC & HMI/LOI systems (Programmable Logic Controllers, Human/Machine Interfaces)
- SCADA systems (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition)
- Site data networks

Lead technical & financial delivery of projects, ensuring best-value solutions that align with business requirements.

Maintain high standards & compliance with regulatory and statutory legislation (including Health & Safety and CDM requirements), acting as the Principal Contractor when needed.

Oversee formal customer handover processes and ensure projects meet agreed scopes.

Support strategic planning by providing technical input for short- and long-term goals.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent ICA/AHU apprenticeship + ONC/HNC/BTEC in Electrical/Control Systems Engineering).
- Relevant engineering experience, particularly with electrical and ICA equipment, enabling analysis and problem-solving for business risks.
- YW Electrical Authorisation (LV) qualifications and experience to facilitate authorisation.
- Technical expertise to challenge and enhance PLC, HMI, SCADA, Telemetry systems, and interpret instrumentation data.
- Ability to modify, diagnose, and maintain ICA technology while adhering to change control procedures.
- Boundary between technical complexity & operational risk awareness, with strong team collaboration.
- Valid driving licence with ability to travel across Yorkshire.

Desirable Skills
- Strong prioritisation and interpersonal skills for managing workloads while maintaining operational relationships.
- Ability to liaise with manufacturers to identify system improvements.
- Risk assessment capabilities covering both site safety and construction risks.
- Technical writing, communication, and project investigation experience.
