Project Engineering Lead
Project Engineering Lead – Tornado Nose Radar/Captor Hardware Technical Support
Salary: £60,000 - £70,000
Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range reflects the approved grade band for this role or a narrower hiring range, benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are governed to maintain internal equity.
About the Role
Leonardo is seeking a Project Engineering Lead (PEL) within its Customer Support and Service Solutions (CS3) business. This role is based within the Fast Jet Sector – Tornado Nose Radar/Captor Hardware Technical Support team.
In this position, you will:
- Lead and manage day-to-day engineering delivery for Tornado Nose Radar (TNR) and key aspects of Typhoon support.
- Provide technical leadership across design modifications, production, test equipment, and training for Captor-M and Tornado systems.
- Oversee technical queries and defect investigations, contributing to the development of in-service support solutions to ensure sustained availability for end-users.
The role requires onsite work four days per week at our Edinburgh site (Monday to Thursday), with the remaining day being fully flexible to include hybrid work from home on Fridays.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-ordinate and manage technical support work packages, with regular reporting on progress and project health.
- Lead and oversee the TNR support team, ensuring timely and effective delivery against project demands.
- Drive Leonardo UK-led TNR support activities across all Tornado-related programmes.
- Contribute to and support Integrated Project Team (IPT) meetings, ensuring project objectives are met.
- Direct delivery commitments to both internal and external customers/partners, fostering strong working relationships.
- Mentor, manage, and develop team members, enhancing performance and technical capability.
- Allocate engineering tasks effectively, ensuring resources are optimised for project delivery needs.
- Provide technical input, solutions, and estimates for bids and proposal activities.
- Ensure project compliance, aligning with company policies, lifecycle processes, and contractual requirements through thorough reviews.

What You’ll Bring
Essential:
- A solid engineering background with experience in defence or government contracts.
- Strong leadership skills, with experience in managing and motivating multi-disciplined teams.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, enabling you to engage with and influence both junior and senior stakeholders internally and externally.
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
Desirable:
- Understanding of military aircraft technical support, at ML1–ML4 maintenance facilities.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

- All candidates must undertake Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) screening.
