Project Manager & Assistant Project Manager – Water Design
Location: Manchester | Hybrid Working Available
The Opportunities
Our client is growing their project delivery team and is looking to recruit both Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers to support the successful delivery of multidisciplinary engineering design projects across the UK water sector.
Whether you're an experienced Project Manager ready to take ownership of complex design projects or an Assistant Project Manager looking to build your career in project delivery, this is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative consultancy delivering essential infrastructure projects. Previous engineering design project experience is essential for both positions.
The Roles
Project Manager
As a Project Manager, you'll take ownership of engineering design projects from inception through to completion, ensuring they are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the highest quality standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading multidisciplinary engineering design projects.
- Managing project programmes, budgets and commercial performance.
- Administering NEC and other contract requirements.
- Coordinating internal engineering teams and external supply chain partners.
- Managing project risks, changes and variations.
- Building strong client relationships and providing regular project reporting.
- Supporting tender submissions and business development activities.
- Mentoring and developing Assistant Project Managers.

Assistant Project Manager
As an Assistant Project Manager, you'll support the delivery of multidisciplinary engineering design projects while developing your project management skills under the guidance of experienced Project Managers and Engineers.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the delivery of engineering design projects from concept through to completion.
- Assisting with programme management and project coordination.
- Coordinating design teams and supply chain partners.
- Supporting NEC contract administration.
- Assisting with cost tracking, change management and project reporting.
- Maintaining communication with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Supporting tender submissions and technical proposals.
- Helping ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and to the required quality standards.
About You
Project Manager
You'll have:
- Proven project management experience delivering engineering design projects.
- Experience within the UK water sector.
- Experience within multidisciplinary engineering environments.
- Strong understanding of programme management, cost control and commercial delivery.
- Experience coordinating engineering design teams and multiple stakeholders.
- Knowledge of commercial and contractual principles.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
Assistant Project Manager
You'll have:
- 2–5 years' experience in engineering design, design coordination, design management or design project management.
- Experience within the UK water sector.
- Degree or HND in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- A genuine desire to develop a long-term career in project management.
- Previous experience supporting engineering design projects.

Desirable Experience (Both Roles)
- Knowledge of NEC contracts.
- Experience managing project change and variations.
- Understanding of multidisciplinary engineering design.
- Knowledge of project planning, cost tracking and commercial reporting.
- Rail sector experience (GRIP, CRE/CEM) would also be beneficial.
