About the Role
As a Project Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering UKAEA’s mission to establish sustainable fusion energy. You’ll oversee projects and programme workstreams spanning research, engineering, technology and infrastructure. Your responsibilities include ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, in budget, and to the highest quality standards, while collaborating across technical, commercial and senior stakeholders.
Depending on experience, you may also lead project teams and mentor emerging project professionals in the energy sector.
What You’ll Be Doing
Core Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end project delivery, ensuring objectives align with UKAEA’s mission for safety, timelines, budget adherence, and quality.
- Develop and maintain project management plans, schedules, governance frameworks, and delivery strategies.
- Oversee project budgets and financial performance, identifying risks and enacting corrective measures.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams, securing necessary resources to achieve successful outcomes.
- Manage risks, issues, dependencies and change requests across the project lifecycle.
- Strengthen relationships with internal and external stakeholders, delivering clear communication and regular progress updates.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, governance frameworks, policies, and engineering assurance requirements.
- Direct procurement and contract management, coordinating with Commercial teams and external suppliers.
- Support project governance through gateways, project boards, assurance activities, and performance reporting.
- Foster continuous improvement by embedding best practices in project management and supporting junior professionals.

Requirements
What You’ll Bring
✅ Proven experience delivering complex projects or significant workstreams within a high-stakes environment. ✅ Recognised project management qualification, such as APM Practitioner (PMP), PRINCE2 Practitioner, or PMP. ✅ NEC4 certification/experience with applied knowledge of CEMAR/ThinkProject. ✅ Strong expertise in project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, Hybrid frameworks). ✅ Financial management skills—budget control, performance forecasting, and risk mitigation. ✅ Exceptional stakeholder management, communication, and leadership abilities. ✅ Experience navigating multiple priorities in fast-paced project environments.
