Civil Engineering Project Manager (NWG ECO Framework) – Bowburn

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive Project Manager to lead the delivery of civil engineering schemes within the NWG ECO Framework. You will manage and coordinate day-to-day project activities from inception through to site completion, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of multiple schemes while working collaboratively to achieve successful outcomes.

Responsibilities

The role encompassess a broad range of activities across Health, Safety & Environment (HSEQ), Technical, Programme & Progress, Commercial, and Quality Assurance. Below are the key expectations tailored to this position:

Health, Safety & Environmental (HSEQ) Responsibilities

  • Conduct inductions and Toolbox Talk (TBT) briefings
  • Develop, review, and Approve Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), including for subcontractors
  • Demonstrate leadership by example, adhering to strict health, safety, and environmental practices -Possess a deep understanding of industry health, safety, and environmental best practices
  • Produce Site Construction Phase Plans
  • Act as Temporary Works Supervisor/Coordinator when required
  • Strive to exceed basic site standards while proposing and implementing innovations
  • Actively contribute to monthly HSEQ meetings as required

Technical Responsibilities

  • Have a strong, all-round knowledge of basic civil engineering principles (drainage, construction techniques etc.)
  • Provide mentorship and development opportunities for team members
  • Be adept at problem-solving, troubleshooting, and innovative thinking
  • Consider project benefits beyond typical parameters, adopting a thinking outside-the-box approach
  • Utilise corporate project management tools (e.g., NWG’s systems)
  • Delegate effectively, ensuring clear communication and appropriate information flow
  • Handle technical queries with confidence
  • Experience with software design tools will be beneficial

Programme & Progress Responsibilities

  • Develop project programmes and provide monthly updates and reporting
  • Have strong familiarity with planning software
  • Independently compile weekly programmes with no additional support required

Commercial Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records of measurement for both direct works and subcontractor works, supporting the commercial team
  • Collaborate with the commercial team to produce variations and quotations
  • Gain experience in the review and appraisal processes, including subcontractor management
  • Identify project risks and opportunities and provide monthly reports to management

Record Keeping & Progress Reporting

  • Prepare daily and weekly progress reports, as well as variation reports for the scheme
  • Be competent in document management systems
  • Chair weekly internal meetings and client progress meetings
  • Produce monthly reports adhering to contract requirements
  • Ensure the team complies with daily and weekly reporting obligations
  • Deliver client presentations and wider team updates with confidence

Quality Assurance Responsibilities

  • Maintain company quality assurance documentation for ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001
  • Support Quality Assurance (QA) and achieve compliance through monthly internal audits
  • Identify and rectify defective works in a timely manner
  • Ensure that the entire project supply chain (team and subcontractors) adhere to established standards, leading by example
  • Compile necessary documentation for H&S Files and handover procedures efficiently

This role scope is not exhaustive —additional tasks may be assigned over time while maintaining comparable responsibilities.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • HNC, HND, or Degree qualification (related to relevant field)
  • Proficient in IT skills
  • CSCS Card ( imperative)
  • 5-day SMSTS (Safety Management for Site Supervisors Training Scheme)
  • Experienced in developing civil engineering schemes
    • From design inception through to site delivery
  • First Aid at Work certification (desirable)
  • Current UK driving licence (clean or low number of points) (essential)

Professional Experience

  • Demonstrated background in civil engineering management
  • Proven experience in project management, including leadership
  • Experience with leadership training (preferably Basic level)
