Project Manager (Environment)
Environmental Project Manager – Project, Programme Management & PMO
(of WSP – growth opportunity within Environmental Project Management)
About the Role
WSP offers the chance to craft a career as uniquely impactful as you are. Our global reach provides diverse challenges and opportunities to collaborate with talented professionals, expanding both your horizons and your career potential.
We’re actively scaling our Environmental Project Management team, welcoming several Project Managers into our inclusive community of PMO, Project Controls, and Programme Management roles.
In this dynamic role, you’ll contribute critical value by delivering multi-disciplinary environmental projects—collaborating closely with Senior Project Managers and Technical Leads to ensure projects remain safe, on-schedule, and within budget. Your work will span the UK, impacting public and private sector clients alike.
Our integrated team offers diverse exposure, supporting everything from smaller project ownership to contributions on large programmes and portfolios—equipping you with the versatility to progress toward a Senior Environmental Project Manager position. Beyond operational excellence, you’ll have opportunities to:
- Mentor junior colleagues
- Shape team development
- Expand our Environmental Project Management capabilities.
There’s no quieter place to impress than among our sphere-changing projects. You could be part of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, Heathrow Expansion, or Sizewell C—or making everyday infrastructure (rail, housing, or sustainable transport infrastructure) better for millions.
And if you thrive behind spreadsheets yet revel in complexity, you’ll excel at WSP.
Your New Role: What’s Involved?
Core Responsibilities
- Project Propositions & Strategy:
- Develop project proposals, defining scope, resourcing, timelines, budget, and requirements for on-time, successful delivery.
- Documentation & Planning:
- Create and maintain project plans, cost forecasts, risk registers, and schedules, taking ownership of smaller projects while supporting Senior Project Managers on larger, complex deliveries.
- Fronting Progress:
- Track and report against deadlines, ensuring adherence to agreed schedules and escalating risks/issues proactively.
- Commercial Excellence:
- Manage daily project budgets—adhering to contracts (e.g., NEC 3/4), floated time-tracking and performance monitoring, ensuring on-budget progression.
- Health & Compliance:
- Secure necessary safety approvals for on-site visits, ensuring H&S documentation is robust before activity begins.
- Contract & Admin Leadership:
- Assist with contract administration, vendor liaison, and regulatory compliance to streamline project execution.
- Risk & Change Control:
- Collaborate with technical teams to align scope, mitigate risks, and manage project-level change requests within governance constraints.
- Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary exchanges, developing relationships with suppliers, colleagues, and clients, and representing Environmental & Consents teams as a trusted interlocutor.
- Sustainability Champions:
- Drive environmental outcomes by embedding sustainability commitments, net-zero goals, and future-ready development into project strategies.
- Impactful Relationship Building:
- Engage with stakeholders at all levels, holding meetings, stakeholder workshops, and key project communications, embodying an advocate for the Environmental Project Management vision.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
