Job Description: Project Manager – Transformation Team

Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our dynamic Transformation Team. This role aims to shape the future of healthcare by leading impactful projects that improve patient care, modernise services, and enhance innovative ways of working.

As a Project Manager, you will:

  • Lead transformation and service improvement programmes aligned with the Trust’s strategic objectives
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver sustainable, patient-centred change
  • Drive measurable results through project management, quality improvement, and change management methodologies
  • Engage with senior stakeholders to implement real change across clinical and non-clinical services

The Team & Our Mission

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Project Manager to join our Transformation Team, helping deliver strategic improvements that enhance quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes across the Trust.

Your role will involve:

  • Leading a portfolio of transformation projects
  • Ensuring sustainable, patient-centred solutions
  • Engaging and influencing stakeholders to embed lasting change
  • Working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with high visibility

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership

  • Lead and deliver transformation and service improvement projects across the Trust
  • Apply project management and quality improvement methodologies to drive measurable results

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • Analyse complex performance data (activity, patient flows, demand, capacity) to identify improvements
  • Present findings to stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams

Stakeholder Engagement & Influence

  • Apply strong influencing and negotiation skills to challenge current practices and advocate for change
  • Use change management strategies to overcome resistance and secure support for service redesign

Change Management & Coaching

  • Empower and coach colleagues to embed continuous improvement in daily work
  • Facilitate training, facilitation, and improvement events across the Trust
  • Serve as a visible champion for patient-centred care and Always Improving principles

Performance & Financial Oversight

  • Manage project delivery against agreed deadlines, outcomes, and financial targets
  • Ensure realisation of financial savings through successfully implemented projects

Requirements

Essential Criteria

✅ First Degree or equivalent experience/diplomas required ✅ Expertise in a recognised service improvement methodology (or equivalent at Masters level) ✅ Proven project management experience with a track record of successful delivery ✅ Change management training and senior-level experience in either healthcare or industry ✅ Strong literacy and report-writing skills ✅ Ability to analyse complex problems, interpret sensitive data, and develop actionable solutions ✅ Proven leadership in change initiatives, with evidence of behavioural influence and collaborative teamwork ✅ Senior-level project management skills in rapidly evolving environments

Desirable (but not essential) Traits

🔹 Healthcare experience (previously preferred in the 2023 role) 🔹 Quality/Service Improvement background 🔹 Coaching or teaching experience 🔹 Familiarity with action learning sets 🔹 +1 recognised improvement methodology (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean, QSIR) 🔹 Certifications in coaching (e.g., QSIR College Associate)
