About the Role
Project Manager – PMCM Rail As a Project Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in delivering complex rail projects of local, national, and international significance. Your primary responsibility is to oversee the successful execution of projects, ensuring they are delivered safely, on time, on budget, and in compliance with requirements.
At WSP, you’ll collaborate closely with clients, multi-disciplinary teams, and stakeholders to drive high-impact projects. You will work within diverse settings—our offices, client locations, and project sites—to deliver strategic initiatives of regional and national importance.

This role is based in our modern, energetic offices across the UK, with the expectation of being on-site 3 or more days per week to foster collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Project Execution
- Coordinate and lead project meetings, bolstering teamwork and resolving critical issues in adherence to safety, functional, and regulatory standards.
- Define and align project scope, goals, and deliverables with clients and stakeholders.
- Establish and manage project timelines, budgets, resource allocation, and risk management.
- Oversee project execution, ensuring consistency with plans and schedules.
- Monitor progress, identify problems, and drive corrective actions.
- Liaise with planners to develop detailed project plans, including budgets and risk mechanisms.
Stakeholder & Client Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the client and WSP.
- Build and sustain strong client relations through effective communication, actively listening and influencing stakeholders.
- Compile and present monthly project reports to arm senior managers with transparent, data-driven updates about project status.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies (e.g., CDM) and community groups, balancing diverse interests.

Risk & Safety Management
- Manage risks: Identify potential hazards during design and construction, propose mitigation strategies, and prioritise CDM duties and compliance.
- Ensure all activity adheres to safety and environmental standards, adhering to governance guidelines and industry benchmarks.
- Drive safety leadership and encourage compliance to minimise project risks.
- Handle Requests For Information (RFIs) and progress warnings effectively to mitigate project issues.
Financial & Commercial Oversight
- Manage contracts in strict accordance with NEC3 & NEC4 guidelines.
- Control budgets through estimation, tracking, and reporting, optimising financial performance aligned with project targets.
- Review and approve project expenditures and invoices.
- Address changes and delays swiftly, implementing adaptive solutions and refining project management processes (e.g., change control).
Client Deliverables & Efficiency
- Implement strategies to enhance project efficiency, productivity, and innovation.
- Introduce and evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies to continuously improve project performance.
Essential Requirements
Education & Certifications
- Degree in a relevant field such as project management, construction management, engineering, science, architecture, or related disciplines.
- Experience or ascendancy toward Chartered status with a recognised professional body.
- Preference given to candidates holding certifications including APM, MSP, PMI, PRINCE2, or Six Sigma.
Experience & Skills
- 5+ years of proven project management experience, ideally in technical and project controls roles.
- Familiarity with NEC3/4 contracts,ΕespciMACALLY relevant expertise in rail sector clients and projects (e.g., Transport for Wales, Network Rail).
- Skilled at managing multi-disciplinary teams, streamlining workstreams and achieving measurable results.
- Solution-focused mindset, adept at regulating challenges, demonstrating flexibility, and quick decision-making.
- Communication & Leadership – Regularly presenting and convening meetings to guest speakers, clients, regulatory bodies and team members in an inclusive manner.
- Problem-solving elite – Able to adapt to diverse, fast-changing environments.
