Project Manager (Water Projects)

Project Manager – Water Asset Design

Location: UK (Based on HR requirements) Employment Type: Permanent Industry: Engineering & Water Sector


About the Role

The Water Asset Design team at WSP operates across the municipal water and non-regulated industrial/international water sectors. Our clients include major UK water companies and key industry contractors. We deliver high-impact infrastructure projects such as:

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Water treatment
  • Sewerage systems
  • Water network schemes

These projects span from routine maintenance to some of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK. Our team is distributed across the UK, with an additional technology support team based in India.

We are now recruiting for a Project Manager to lead multidisciplinary projects—from optioneering through delivery and client handover.

In this role, you will lead a range of infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects spanning water industry and industrial clients. Your responsibilities include:

  • Planning, executing, monitoring, and delivering projects or work packages aligned with client objectives.
  • Leading multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring high-quality delivery and a robust focus on health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Manage project proposals, determining:

  • Project requirements
  • Scope
  • Resource allocation
  • Programmes and cost estimates

Owner of P&L and commercial accountability, including:

  • Revenue delivery
  • Margin and overhead management
  • Budget determination and attainment
  • Risk and opportunity reviews
  • Cost control
  • Accounts payable/billing and cash collection

Develop essential project management documentation:

  • Project management plans
  • Cost estimates and forecasts
  • Risk registers
  • Project schedules
  • Stakeholder registers
  • Project org charts

Monitor and control:

  • Project schedules
  • Manhours
  • Budgets
  • Forecasts
  • Expenditure

Ensure effective contract management, including:

  • Contract administration
  • Change management

Manage and mentor project team members (including Assistant PMs), ensuring outputs meet project requirements.

Oversee project deliverables, records, and information management.

Communicate project information clarity and accuracy to both the team and clients.

Anticipate and preemptively resolve issues or conflicts that risk project delivery.

Lead multi-disciplinary teams of technical/professional staff and suppliers.

Promote a culture of continuous improvement, capturing lessons learned.


Requirements & Qualifications

Experience

  • Proven success in managing infrastructure projects, preferably within regulated water or non-regulated water industries (ideal yet not essential).

Certifications & Knowledge

  • Working familiarity with and accreditation for administering NEC contracts.
  • Membership in a professional project management or engineering body, such as:
    • Association for Project Management (APM)
    • Project Management Institute (PMI)
    • Member of Institute of Civil Engineers (MICE)

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in project management tools and software.

Soft Skills

  • Demonstrated competence in stakeholder management, risk management, planning/scheduling, and commercial oversight.
