Project Manager (Water Sector) Business Department: Bethell Construction Positions: 3 | Area: Greater Manchester
Job Summary
To undertake and manage civil engineering projects, ensuring delivery and achievement of outcomes in alignment with client requirements, Bethell’s standards, and project targets. Collaborate effectively with clients, design partners, internal teams, sub-contractors, and external professionals. Oversee health and safety, quality assurance, environmental management, contract administration, cost control, planning, communication, and people management.
Principal Accountabilities
Safety
- Strengthen company-wide safety compliance—implement all necessary measures to ensure a safe working environment per Bethell policies.
- Conduct daily H&S briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions, logging records for transparency via the Company’s CDE.
- Ensure Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are dynamically updated and compliant with in-progress works.
- Conduct scheduled site inspections to monitor compliance, reviewing progress with operatives weekly.
- Train and assess workforce competency, working with training leads to support skill-matrix requirements.
Customer Relationships
- Represent Bethell professionally to clients, maintaining positive communication and proactive updates.
- Ensure contract compliance, promptly addressing variations, and facilitating accurate value adjustments with Quantity Surveyors.
- Maintain site cleanliness, tidiness, and corporate branding to project a polished image.
- Distribute Confirmation of Verbal Instructions (CVIs), assemble Technical Queries (TQs), and flag weekly progress reports.
- Lead post-project handover, including delivery of O&M manuals, Safeguarding and Environmental files, and as-built drawings.

People Management
- Cultivate a positive work culture, motivating teams to achieve project objectives.
- Demand standards for attendance (tracking time via weekly sheets) and performance management insights for direct operatives.
- Engage and monitor sub-contractor performance, facilitating aligned working hours and facilitating compliant deliverables.
Integrity & Records
- Coordinate health and safety, environmental, and project records, ensuring protocols are adhered to.
- Report instances of near misses, environmental breaches, or customer complaints to board-level for action.
- Maintain accurate weekly reports, including:
- Plant records
- Material receipts
- Timesheets
- Project filing systems.
Sustainability
- Proactively resource and track project timelines to minimize delays and energy consumption.
- Architect and develop Any environmental movements programs, including:
- Recycling/mass reuse pid lines for waste materials.
- Continuous reduction of noise or air pollution impacts.
- Oversee site planning for efficient resource allocation (materials/plant), negotiating deliveries to optimize appearance logistica day:l patching.
Excellence in Quality
- Deploy a site-wide Quality Management System to reflect technical rigor and adhere to specifications.
- Uphold zero-defect standards, identifying Issues of non-conformance (INCs—and following resolution protocols.
- Ensure updated drawings/drill lines and advisor whether a scope execution misalignments with often “diagnosed” without minor glitch correction.
- Conduct pre-completion inspections alongside stringent progress audits.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Experience
- Operations role: CSCS card
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) accredited qualification
- Guaranteed 3 days of assigned
- First Aid training (5 days or validated by suitable GQC)
- Min. 5 years in site supervision or “supervisory levels,” preferably in civil engineering
- Full clean driving license (for UK operational activity)
- HNC/HND/degree in construction-related studies
- Temporary Works Supervisor accreditation (preferable)
- SEATS (Site Environmental Assessment Tool Support) certification (preferable)
