Project Planner
Project Planner (12 Month Fixed Term Contract)
Overview
- £32,000–£37,000 p.a. + Pension + BUPA + ShareSave + 6.6 weeks holiday + Hybrid Working (3 days in the office)
- Location: Southampton, Store Support Office

Join us as a Project Planner and play a pivotal role in executing range reviews, ensuring they are delirvered efficiently—right the first time.
Role Purpose
As a Project Planner, you will: identify, manage, and deliver large, complex, and medium/small range change projects across the B&Q estate. handle planning and coordination to provide cost transparency, technical requirement clarity, and communication frameworks for seamless implementation by commercial, design, and operational teams.
Responsibilities
Core Accountabilities
- Collaborate with Merchandisers: Support cost tracking, reporting, and risk escalation for range reviews they oversee and scope—ensuring resourcing is precisely aligned with project needs.
- Support Project Management: Work under project-focused leadership to implement cost modelling (both macro and store-level), track budgets, and escalate issues to PMs proactively.
- Investigate & Optimise: Partnership with Category Teams, Visual Merchandising, and Planogram teams to build comprehensive store infrastructure and merchandising insights. Validate capability gaps in fixtures, equipment, utilities/sprinklers, and fixtures to address requirements before sign-off.
- Education & Adaptability: Drill deep into project briefs to uncover implicit needs and document hole gaps (informed by extensive knowledge of store layouts, product finals, and COGS structures).
- Survey and Data Capture: Lead preparation and QC of store condition assessments to capture validated ‘as-is’ conditions of stores.
- Scenario Planning & Documentation:
- Establish tailored implementation frameworks that log:
- Stockparts management
- Store services logistics (lighting, surveillance, etc)
- In-store/temporary storage planning

- Project-Trail Community: Act as final issues escalation hub, aiding internal/external teams (apparatus, temporary space qa, signage, etc.) with redundancy timelines and contingency responses.
- Cross-Functional Enablement: Share best-case implementation outcomes with external agencies and B&Q teams to hardwires performance skill. Work with Retail to scope closure, remedial resolution and approvals.

Skills & Experience Required
Non-Negotiable:
✔ People Skills: Built on patience, clarity, and empathy. Balances mild vs. investigative listening with informed but non-defensive pressures to reduce time to finality on difficult decisions. ✔ Structured Problem Solving: Thrives under structured environments but unblinkingly interprets grey areas in shifts/fluxes, that colleagues are typically passive on. ✔ Project Accountability: Granular ownership of high-level costing to individual-level apportionment (pure numerical quotient are a baseline). ✔ Vision: Detailed knowledge of Retail Design bureaus, fixture and engineering cost dyes, COGS structure, and a ‘deal closing’ instinct that marshals stakeholder alignment. ✔ Independence: Ability to track beyond oversight constraints, present propositions for on-track efficacy measures, and explain internal audit compliance within the context of legal limits.

Experience Baseline:
A track record in Retail or an adjacent industry that touches store transformation (e.g. agent-based merchandising, category cost appraisals). Innovative zoning experience, scalable experience is helpful, and an eye for restricting risk within errors. For a well-rounded asset, university/departmental points in commerce or supply chain’s specialities will be an aid but not precluded.
