Project Planner, Senior Planner & Planning Manager – Rail Infrastructure
(North & Northwest Region, Hybrid Role: Minimum 3 Days On-Site)
About the Role
You’ll become part of Arcadis, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy, working across 30+ countries to deliver world-class solutions for natural and built assets.
This role in the North & Northwest region focuses on Rail infrastructure projects, combining strategic planning, performance reporting, and portfolio-level delivery. You will:
- Drive project scheduling, Earned Value Management (EVM), and risk mitigation
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure timely and high-quality delivery
- Implement improvement initiatives in planning processes and digital adoption (e.g., Power BI).
This is a hybrid role, requiring at least 3 days on-site per week.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Controls
- Create and maintain robust project baselines, Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), and detailed schedules aligned with delivery milestones.
- Implement earned value reporting to track financial performance against objectives.
- Identify variances and risks, develop recovery plans, and ensure alignment with contingency strategies.
- Monitor compliance with Network Rail procedures and planning lifecycle frameworks.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Analyse project KPIs, progress data, and programme-wide insights to inform leadership decisions.
- Assure schedule integrity through audits of contractor plans and cross-department reviews.
- Guide cost forecasting using project controls and commercial analysis.

Collaboration & Change Leadership
- Work across functional teams (client, technical, commercial) to optimise delivery pipelines.
- Progress digital capabilities, such as utilisation of Power BI to enhance scheduling and reporting.
- Develop static and dynamic strategies for programmes.
- Champion continuous improvement in planning tools, methodologies, and stakeholder engagement.
Technical & Stakeholder Relationships
- Engage engineering staff, contractors, and clients at all levels to promote clarity and timeliness.
- Extensive deep-dive expertise required in schedule assurance processes, baseline updates, and PM uptake.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Experience & Expertise
- 5+ years in project planning and scheduling, preferably within rail or infrastructure programmes.
- Strong track record managing complex engineering projects under multiple contracting models (e.g., EPC, DBMO, P3).
Education
- Degree, HNC, or HND in Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
Technical & Operational Proficiency
- Proficiency in planning software (e.g., Primavera, Microsoft Project).
- Excellent presentation skills to visualise schedules easily.
- Cost engineering, commercial awareness, and project cost monitoring experience.
Leadership & Teamwork
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate across technical and managerial teams.
- Strong commercial acumen and communication skills at all organizational levels.

Desirable Qualifications & Competencies
- Membership with a professional body (e.g., APM, CIEH, ICE).
- Familiarity with upper-tier rail investment systems (e.g., Rail Delivery Group, ORR).
- Demonstrable experience in delivering large-scale project delivery or investment strategies.
