Project Quality Engineer – London (Remote Working Options Available)
At Tokamak Energy, we’re pioneering fusion energy and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies, working closely with governments, industries, and strategic partners to commercialise breakthrough solutions. A key element of our innovation lies in our end-to-end HTS systems expertise, spanning design to manufacturing.
At the forefront of this mission, we’re the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government’s STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract (2019–2029). Through collaboration with UK Fusion Energy, we’re delivering HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also advancing tokamak systems and plasma integration.
Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Tokamak Energy now operates as a global leader with headquarters in Oxfordshire, subsidiaries in the US and Japan, and an expanding team of over 300 professionals.
Our business operates across three core divisions:
- Fusion Fusion energy technologies, expertise, and testbeds, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.
- TE Magnetics Innovative HTS system solutions for fusion energy, power distribution, life sciences, and propulsion.
- Ridgway Machines Specialised manufacturing equipment for superconducting, electrical, and energy sectors, accelerating HTS industrialisation.
The Role: Project Quality Engineer
This hands-on Project Quality Engineer role sits at the heart of fast-paced, high-priority engineering projects, working closely with cross-functional teams to embed quality processes from build through project close. It’s an opportunity to shape quality strategies for a growing, project-driven organisation—balancing execution with continuous improvement to drive consistent excellence.
You’ll act as the trusted quality partner (without direct authority) to engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams, helping projects achieve success through structured problem-solving, documentation, and knowledge-sharing.
Key Responsibilities
- Embedded quality support: Work directly within project teams from build to project close, ensuring robust quality practices are adopted and sustained.
- Define & maintain quality plans: Develop, implement, and update Project Quality Plans and Control Plans to align with project objectives.
- Drive PFMEA maturity: Lead and refine PFMEA sessions, even late in the design cycle, to build core quality expertise across teams.
- Documentation & storage: Capture, review, and manage production and quality documentation per established standards.
- Root cause & problem-solving: Support in-depth investigations and collaborative problem-solving activities across all teams.
- Knowledge transfer: Systematise lessons learned (risks, failure modes, process decisions) into reusable structured knowledge for future projects.
- Audit & non-conformance support: Assist in internal audits, investigate non-conformances, and drive corrective actions where required.
- Practical quality processes: Contribute to the development of scalable, actionable quality systems that remain relevant to real-world operations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
