Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to;
1. Site Management & Coordination
- Oversee day to day operations on the construction site to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans.
- Safe locating of underground services.
- Coordinate and direct subcontractors, labour, and site resources.
- Ensure all personnel follow site rules, procedures, and safety requirements.
2. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Promote and enforce compliance with all Health & Safety legislation (including CDM Regulations), company policies, and method statements.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections, toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
- Ensure correct use of PPE and report any hazards, near misses, or incidents.
- Support environmental protection measures and ensure compliance with environmental management plans.
3. Quality Assurance & Control
- Ensure all works are completed to the required technical standards, specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Monitor workmanship and materials delivered to site.
- Identify defects and ensure timely corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate site records related to inspections, tests, and approvals.
4. Progress Monitoring & Reporting
- Track progress of work against programme and report delays, resource requirements, or issues affecting delivery.
- Participate in site meetings and provide updates to the Project/Contracts Manager and escalate to Head of Department if necessary.
- Maintain accurate daily records, including diaries, photographs, labour returns, and material usage.

5. Technical Support
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and method statements.
- Provide technical guidance to operatives and subcontractors.
- Assist engineers with setting out, measurements, and resolving on-site technical problems.
6. Resource & Materials Management
- Monitor material deliveries, storage, and usage to minimise waste.
- Request additional resources as required and ensure tools, equipment, and plant are fit for use.
7. Compliance with Contract & Company Policies
- Ensure works comply with all contractual requirements, company standards, and statutory regulations.
- Support audits and inspections as required.
- Uphold company values, behaviours, and professional standards on site.
8. Stakeholder Liaison
- Communicate with clients, inspectors, and third parties in a professional manner.
- Manage public interface issues (e.g., access, safety barriers), where applicable.
Skills Essential
Technical & Industry Knowledge
- Strong understanding of civil engineering construction processes, materials, and methods.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and method statements.
- Good knowledge of UK construction regulations, including CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation.
Site Supervision & Leadership
- Proven ability to supervise site teams, subcontractors, and labour effectively.
- Strong leadership with the ability to motivate staff and maintain high standards.
- Effective delegation and decision-making skills.
Health & Safety Competence
- Ability to conduct risk assessments, toolbox talks, and site safety inspections.
- Competent understanding of safe systems of work, RAMS, and accident reporting procedures.

- Clear verbal and written communication for interacting with workers, managers, and clients.
- Ability to produce accurate site records, reports, and daily diaries.
- Professional interpersonal skills for managing disputes and on-site issues.

- Ability to identify and resolve technical and operational site issues promptly.
- Strong judgement when escalating issues to engineers or managers.

- Ability to plan and coordinate site activities efficiently.
- Strong prioritisation skills to manage multiple tasks under time pressure.
- Good record-keeping and attention to detail.
Progress towards becoming fully competent with CDM project roles and responsibilities
- Carry out and manage site inductions for all workers and visitors.
- Verify worker competence, training, certification (e.g., CSCS/CPCS).
- Maintain induction records and control sign-in / sign-out.
- Review, approve and monitor RAMS for all activities.
- Ensure the Construction Phase Plan (CPP) is in place and updated.
- Manage and monitor permits to work (excavation, hot works, lifting, confined spaces, etc.).
- Conduct regular site safety inspections and record findings.
- Inspect excavations, scaffolds, temporary works, lifting equipment, fire points, and welfare facilities.
- Maintain site paperwork: site diary, risk register, emergency plans, welfare checks, etc.
- Monitor contractor performance and compliance with RAMS and site rules.
- Enforce safe systems of work and stop unsafe work when required.
- Ensure welfare facilities are adequate and maintained.
- Maintain site housekeeping, signage, access routes and fire safety standards.
- Manage environmental controls (noise, dust, vibration, waste, spill prevention).
- Collect as-built information, O&M documents and contribute to the Health & Safety File.
- Complete close-out inspections and ensure all documentation is finalised for handover.
