Project Support Officer (Armed Forces Talent Programme)

This post is open to Armed Forces Community Applicants only and is a Fixed Term position until 31st March 2027**

On 1 April 2026, NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) became one national organisation, focused on continuity today and a stronger, more connected service for tomorrow.

As part of this transformation, NSS and NES have joined to form a new organisation: Public Services Delivery Scotland (PSD Scotland). This new organisation will play a pivotal role in supporting the renewal and ensuring the long-term sustainability of health and care services across Scotland.

About The Organisation

PSD Scotland unites expertise from NES and NSS in a way that will allow us to accelerate national programmes to support the NHS to deliver better care, now and in the future. We support staff with education and training, provide the tools and data that improve services, and run vital national functions such as procurement, logistics and blood, tissue and cell services.

The Post

A vacancy has arisen for a Project Support Officer position within the Operations and Delivery Team of the Clinical Directorate. The team has a broad portfolio of work including national co-ordination and support to cancer services; and conducting a range of national reviews and development projects to support the NHS and public services in Scotland. The post holder will assist a transformation programme focusing on postmortem services in Scotland, being developed in partnership with the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Service, involving a range of stakeholders including universities, the NHS and local authorities, and engaging professional groups such as Forensic Pathologists, Managers and Technicians. It is a vital public service for which our work aims to bring more resilience.

Our work will require an organised approach to assessing which aspects of the service require priority support for problem solving, then progressing a range of solutions for challenges such as workforce planning, digital harmonisation, the establishment of agreed standards and clinical governance.

Your role will be to support the Director of Operations and Delivery to apply project management tools and approaches to the project, assisting with research and analysis of the challenges and potential solutions, and enabling positive regular communication and involvement of stakeholders.

The Candidate

The successful candidate must be a member of the Armed Forces Community (i.e. a veteran, service leaver or a member of their family including spouse, partner or dependent)

You will bring organisational skills and the ability to apply critical thinking to challenges and the generation of solutions. Familiarity with project management approaches and principles will be beneficial. You will have good communication skills verbally and in writing and feel comfortable to work with numeric and narrative data to collate information and re-present it concisely.

You should feel comfortable with using MS365 tools (Word; Excel; Powerpoint; Sharepoint; Teams) and working on a hybrid basis. However, postmortem services are provided throughout Scotland and from time to time, visits and face to face meetings may require travel (public transport is feasible for this).

In this role you will gain an insight into the work of a national NHS board’s strategic approach to supporting public services, whilst linking directly to the services provided in the NHS, local authorities and universities. It is a fascinating area of work touching the lives of many people.

Location and Working Pattern:

The work pattern is 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Flexible working patterns are agreed with the line manager to enable family-friendly working.

Most of our work is hybrid, working online from home – a laptop, screen and peripherals are provided. Some in-person working will be necessary, usually at a PSD Scotland base in Edinburgh (Gyle Square) or Glasgow (Delta House); and on occasion at the office base of the main postmortem services (Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow and Aberdeen). In-person working is planned ahead and subject to transport times.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK and have entitlement to work in the UK for the post in which you will be employed.
