Project Team Manager (PTM) – Environment Agency

About the Role
As a Project Team Manager (PTM), you will play a key role in managing and supporting a high-performing technical team, delivering excellence in project and programme management within Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM). Your responsibilities will include:
Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership
- Line management of a technical team, including recruitment, resource planning, onboarding and inductions.
- Providing training, coaching, and mentoring to help your team thrive.

Portfolio Oversight
- Overseeing a portfolio of work, ensuring projects stay on track while resolving and escalating issues that cannot be addressed at a project level.
- Monitoring project progress and implementing corrective measures where needed.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Building strong relationships across the department and wider organisation to enable smooth delivery of projects.
- Supporting project, contract and risk management decisions, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement.

Interpersonal & Resilient Leadership
- Developing resilient networks with other team leaders to facilitate effective teamwork and successful outcomes.
- Fostering a culture where the team performs at their best, working collaboratively with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.

Training & Role Expectations
- Ensuring new and existing team members receive the training they need.
- All employees must undertake training and participate in incident response duties when required. An incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency, helping to protect communities and the environment.

We are the Project and Programme Delivery (PPD) team, part of the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) directorate. With 80 project delivery professionals in the South West, we deliver:

Requirements
Essential
- Qualifications & Professional Standing
- Degree (or equivalent) in engineering, geography, business or project management, ideally with chartered membership of a professional body.
- Experience & Expertise
- >8 years of experience in project, contract and/or people management, Ideally in engineering/construction and/or flood & coastal risk management.
- Strong technical knowledge to manage teams overseeing hydrology, river modelling, feasibility assessments, and asset management.
- Proven ability to deliver results through others in a challenging technical environment.
- Experience in mentoring and supporting teams to deliver project objectives effectively.
- Ownership & Collaborative Skills
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills to inspire collaboration and drive strategic organisational ambitions.
Desirable
- Training in HR or business management.
- Experience in project management & health and safety.
- Familiarity with contract strategy/contract management.
- Experience working on a ‘client-side’ role for the Environment Agency, Defra or RCA.

Additional Information
- This role does not qualify for sponsorship – ensure you have the right to work in the UK.
- Applicants must reside in the South West and co-locate at their base office a minimum of 2 days per week. Regular travel to other sites and overnight stays may be required.
- Location: Brigwater, with interviews taking place w/c 10th August.
