Underwriter – Specialist Commercial Insurance Role
Overview An exciting opportunity for a Underwriter to join a specialist commercial insurance business. This pivotal role entails assessing, pricing, and managing risks within an allocated portfolio, balancing profitable growth while fostering strong broker relationships. Operating within delegated underwriting authority, you will evaluate complex submissions, make critical underwriting decisions, and support the business’s ongoing success and development.
Key Responsibilities

Risk Assessment & Decision Making
- Review insurance applications, financial data, and supporting documentation to determine risk acceptability.
- Underwrite new and existing business, adhering to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and assigned authority levels.
- Analyse risks and recommend appropriate pricing, coverage terms, and policy enhancements.

Quotation & Engagement Management
- Issue timely and professional quotations in response to broker and stakeholder inquiries.
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly—including referrals, requirements, adverse decisions, and declinures—both verbally and in writing.

Portfolio & Relationship Oversight
- Monitor the quality, profitability, and performance of the allocated portfolio and contribute to management reporting.
- Build and maintain **strong relationships with brokers and key business partners, supporting business development and marketing initiatives.
- Attend broker meetings and market visits as needed.

- Stay current with market trends, regulatory developments, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with senior underwriters and management on complex or high-risk referrals.
- Develop expertise in underwriting systems and maintain accurate records and data.

What We’re Looking For
Essential Requirements
- Proven underwriting experience within the commercial insurance market.
- A solid understanding of:
- Underwriting principles,
- Risk assessment,
- Pricing strategies,
- Portfolio management.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound commercial decisions.
- Exceptional negotiation, communication, and relationship management capabilities.
- Independence with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external stakeholders.
- Outstanding organisational skills to manage multiple priorities concurrently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant business software/web platforms.
- Commitment to excellent service and adherence to high professional standards.

Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience in specialist commercial insurance lines.
- Exposure to broker-facing business development activities.
- Familiarity with insurance underwriting systems and platforms.
- Progress towards or completion of a recognised insurance qualification.
