The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has an exciting opportunity for a Practical, Logical Thinker with a Military, Defence or Engineering Background to join their Secure Infrastructure Team as a Protective Security Engineer.
This versatile, critical role will see you assisting and delivering specialist building projects—both internally and for external clients—while ensuring these meet the highest security standards. You’ll act as the key liaison between stakeholders, engineers, and authorities, ensuring seamless security integration within infrastructure projects.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Head of Secure Infrastructure, this position requires:
- Technical prowess to design and deliver security systems
- Exploring and utilising commercial and sector holistic experience
- Facilitating a high degree of stakeholder engagement (both internally and externally)
Primarily, you will be the face of security compliance and technical integrity on every project, maintaining ‘best practice’ and providing support and advice to architects, engineers, and other designers.
Responsibilities
- Design & Delivery – Oversee the implementation of secure infrastructure projects, ensuring flawless execution for MTC and external clients across multiple sectors (aerospace, defence, infrastructure, etc.).
- Security Architecture & Compliance –
- Steer protective security engineering design, ensuring alignment with military, defence, and building regulations
- Embed security measures into designs and strategies before project commencement
- Stakeholder Coordination –
- Build strong partnerships with clients, contractors, designers, and certifying authorities
- Advise accreditation teams on security specifications and compliance
- Technical Leadership –
- Lead the appointment and functional approval of external services teams (designs, contractors, regulators)
- Monitor and expedite projects to ensure on-time and cost-effective delivery
- Continuous Improvement –
- Lead process reviews and design optimisations to fortify security standards
- Drive innovative security solutions aligned with defended environments

Who We’re Looking For
A degree-qualified engineer or equivalent, preferably from a security, architecture, or engineering body (e.g., the Security Institute, RIBA, or Royal Mechanical/Electrical Engineers’ Institute) with frroduction-end defence or engineering experience. Ideal candidates will have:
Technical & Practical Experience:
- Proven ability to inspect and validate site installations
- Expertise in Computer-Aided Design (Revit & AutoCAD)
- Depth of experience in at least two of the following:
- Physical security hardware (CCTV, access control, fire empanel systems)
- Defensive architectural design for controlled/secure environments
- Defence or defence-cleared/regulated engineering projects
- Experience with the UK’s National Security Vetting (NSV) system (Developed Vetting) and clearance levels
Soft Skills & Professional Abilities:
- Mastery of complex stakeholder negotiations
- Robust risk assessment and management acumen
- Financial awareness when benchmarking costs against value and ROI
- Capacity to mentor, lead, and motivate a functional team
- Cultural agility – experience working within high-security cultures
Desirable Knowledge & Experience
- Defence Security Integration – Familiarity with JSPs (Joint Service Publications) and NPSA’s STaMP (Security Technical Assessment & Management Process)
- Technical Subscription – Recent experience specifying security hardware (biometric, video surveillance, access control, etc.)
- Proposals & Tendering – Previous involvement in defending industrial estimates and pitching projects to large commercial and/or defence clients
- Technical Reporting – Ability to marshall technical documentation for submission to regulatory bodies or partner nations (as part of partnered projects)
