Consultant Anaesthetist – NHS Grampian
Location: Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin, Scotland
Appointment Type: Full-time, flexible, or part-time
About the Role
NHS Grampian is delighted to expand the Anaesthetic Department at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. This role is a full-time appointment, with the primary base at Dr Gray’s Hospital. There may be opportunities for entering specialist interests or potential work placements at other Grampian hospitals or Health Boards. Individualised job planning can be tailored to meet both service needs and applicant preferences, including flexible/part-time/annualised work patterns.
Dr Gray’s Hospital is a District General Hospital located in Elgin, in the North-East of Scotland. Inverness lies 35 miles to the west, while Aberdeen is 65 miles to the east.
The Scottish Government has committed to reestablishing a consultant-led obstetric service at the hospital. This expansion will involve:
- The establishment of a new resident non-consultant rota tier
- Growth of the existing consultant team to reach at least 12 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) consultants to meet Royal College of Anaesthetists Obstetric Anaesthesia requirements.
Requirements
Registered & Licensed:
- Must hold Full Registration with a licence to practise from the General Medical Council (GMC) (licence must be confirmed in advance).
Training & Certification:
- Fellowship in Robust Anesthesia (FRCA) is a mandatory qualification.
- UK-trained applicants:
- Must demonstrate higher specialist training leading to Completion of Training (CCT), or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register by the date of interview.
- Alternative routes:
- Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or Portfolio Pathway Route doctors can apply for a substantive Consultant post only after achieving CESR or Portfolio Pathway registration.
- Doctors with an international recognised specialist qualification approved by the GMC must have confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register to apply for a substantive post.
- Non-Specialist doctors (Locum Opportunities):
- Apply for Locum Consultant posts (up to 12 months) if not listed on the GMC Specialist Register.
- While in locum roles, they may be invited to apply for CESR or Portfolio Pathway specialist registration in the meantime.

Housing Support for Key Workers
Moray Council offers temporary accommodation for key workers, including NHS healthcare professionals, to support filling skill shortages in the region.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be filling a public sector role (e.g., Consultants, Nurses, Physiotherapists) where local shortages exist.
- Must be relocating from outside Moray.
- Willing to accept a Short Scottish Secure Tenancy (SSST) – a temporary housing arrangement lasting minimum 6 months, with the possibility of extending up to 12 months.
