Consultant General Surgeon – Full-Time (10 PA’s) – Dr Gray’s Hospital, NHS Grampian
We are seeking a substantive Consultant General Surgeon to join our experienced surgical team, consisting of:
- 2 Consultant General Surgeons
- 2 Specialist Doctors
- 1 Associate Specialist
- Supporting staff: 2 Specialist Trainees, 1 Core Trainee, and 4 Foundation Doctors
This is a full-time, permanent position in Elgin, Moray, an area renowned for its natural beauty, excellent schools, affordability, and recreational opportunities.
About The Role
The broadcasting Surgical Unit at Dr Gray’s Hospital, located in Elgin, recruits one full-time substantive Consultant General Surgeon to maintain and develop General Surgical Services for a population of approximately 132,000.
You would work across emergency and elective General Surgery, with a focus on broader surgical disciplines including paediatrics and urology. The institution also provides strong links with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, ensuring access to tertiary referral and major trauma-related services.
The Clinical Academic Niche involves close ties with the University of Aberdeen, including opportunities for medical student teaching, particularly in 4th and 5th-year rotations.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality emergency and elective General Surgical services in Dr Gray’s Hospital and select community hospitals.
- Contribute to outpatient and inpatient surgery with breadth across general surgery, paediatric surgery, and urology.
- Engage in teaching and support of specialist trainees, core trainees, and foundation doctors.
- Collaborate with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and other medical professionals for specialist referrals including trauma.
- Participate in teaching and undergraduate student education.
- Maintain professional development, staff supervision, clinical leadership, and maintain clinical audit, research, and teaching standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Full registration with a licence to practise from the General Medical Council (GMC) (must be in place upon appointment).
- Evidence of higher specialist training leading to:
- Completion of CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training); or
- Within 6 months of confirmed quarterly or yearly CCT progression on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Alternatively,Completion of a certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or portfolio pathway qualification route.

- Confirmation of entry on the GMC Specialist Register or further consideration for a locum appointment.
Note: Locum consultants for up to 12 months are eligible for Locum Consultants if substantive appointees could not be made, provided an application for a CESR/portfolio pathway is in progress.
Location & Support
- Dr Gray’s Hospital is located in Elgin, a county in Moray, noted for its scenic beauty and high quality of life.
- Wishful Housing Support by the Moray Council for keyworker recruits moving from outside the area. This support is available as a Short Scottish Secure Tenancy (SSST) for up to 12 months.
Conditions of Service & Working Arrangements:
- As from 1/4/2026, the Agenda for Change working week will reduce to 36 hours (full-time), with hourly rates adjusted to maintain salary parity.
- Typically, consulting examinations will be arranged virtually in-person where necessary.
Key Worker Housing Support Overview
The Moray Council provides temporary housing for approved keyworker recruits moving to the area. Key features:
- Eligible roles include NHS professionals such as Consultants, Nurses, and Physiotherapists where local labour shortages persist.
- All applicants must be moving from outside Moray and willing to accept a Short Scottish Secure Tenancy (SSST).
- Housing is granted for a minimum of 6 months, extendable up to 12 months.
