NHS Western Isles is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to join the Public Dental Service (PDS) for a 12 month post based in the Isle of Lewis, with the potential opportunity to continue on a permanent basis.
About the Role
The Western Isles Dental Centre is the principal Public Dental Service facility within the Western Isles and is a modern, well-equipped dental centre with 12 surgeries. The centre provides both PDS and General Dental Service (GDS) care and plays an important role in dental education, hosting outreach students from the University of Aberdeen and Dental Therapy students studying within the University of the Highlands and Islands Oral Health Science Programme. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will benefit from excellent access to dental therapists, hygienists and the wider dental care professional workforce, as well as visiting Specialist services.
The successful applicant will provide dental care to both PDS and GDS patients in a clinical setting and may also be required to deliver care in domiciliary, hospital and care home environments. Applicants should possess the clinical skills and confidence to provide a broad range of treatments in sometimes challenging circumstances, including caring for patients with additional and complex needs. You will be working alongside a supportive team of experienced clinicians, with excellent opportunities for peer support and professional development. On call commitments will be a requirement of the post.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
