The Highways & Waste team are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You’ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark.

We're looking for a Public Rights of Way Officer to join our Planning and Highways team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys combining technical expertise with community engagement, helping to maintain and enhance access to the countryside while delivering real benefits for residents and visitors.
What You'll Get To Do
- Developing and managing programmes of work to improve the Public Rights of Way Network, ensuring projects are delivered in line with Council policies, priorities and budgets.
- Supporting the promotion of countryside access and recreation through events, publications and engagement initiatives.
- Encouraging and coordinating voluntary involvement in maintaining and enhancing local routes.
- Assisting the Network Manager with the preparation of reports, evidence and documentation relating to legal processes and submissions.
- Providing professional advice and guidance on public rights of way matters, keeping up to date with relevant legislation, policy and best practice.
- Helping to shape and deliver a customer-focused, high-quality service that meets the needs of residents, visitors and stakeholders.
- Working collaboratively with internal teams, external partners and local communities to support the effective management of the rights of way network.

What You'll Bring
- Rights of Way legislation and practice
- Local Government procedures
- 5 GCSEs at Grades AC (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics
- Current full driving licence
- Experience of using IT systems and digital tools within a public service environment
- Experience Of Applying Effective Organisational, Communication And Negotiating Skills
- Ability to manage workloads and priorities effectively
- Experience of working with a range of stakeholders and customers in a professional environment
