Senior Python Backend Engineer (Contract)
£600 – £900 per day (Outside IR35) + Extension
Likely Fully Remote (UK)
6 Month Contract
About the Role
We're hiring a hands-on Senior Python Backend Engineer to embed with a core engineering team building production systems for enterprise customers across Europe. You'll partner directly with the founders and senior engineers to build, deploy, and harden services already running in production. As one of the senior technical voices in the room, you'll own the backend end-to-end.
What You'll Do
You'll be deep in the code, opinionated about system design, and comfortable owning the backend from architecture through to production. You'll work directly with engineers, product, and leadership to:
- Design and ship production services and APIs using Python (FastAPI, Django, or Flask)
- Build and optimise data models, queries, and storage across Postgres, Redis, and related systems
- Design for scale: caching, queuing, async processing, and performance under real production load
- Own deployment, monitoring, and reliability for the services you build (CI/CD, observability, incident response)
- Partner with product and engineering to ship in tight, fast-moving cycles

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
