Python Engineer
Python Engineer (Backend) – United Kingdom Partner company-based role – Applications managed directly by hiring team
As a Python Engineer, you’ll drive the development of high-performance backend systems powering next-generation genomic analysis and precision healthcare technologies. You’ll work with a global, distributed engineering team to design scalable APIs, web platforms, and cloud-based solutions that impact real-world healthcare solutions. This is an opportunity to leverage modern Python/Django stacks, engage in cloud architecture discussions, and deliver production-grade software while addressing meaningful challenges in bioinformatics and healthcare innovation.
Key Responsibilities

Backend Development & Architecture
- Build, enhance, and maintain scalable Python-based backend applications using Django and Django REST Framework.
- Collaborate on system architecture, ensuring high performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Optimise RESTful APIs and backend services for seamless frontend-backend communication.

Development Lifecycle
- Lead end-to-end delivery (design → implementation → testing → deployment) of assigned features.
- Conduct peer reviews, drive code quality, and apply software engineering best practices.

Testing & Operational Excellence
- Implement and enforce unit, integration, and functional testing frameworks.
- Participate in performance tuning, diagnose bottlenecks, and monitor system health.
- Assume shared on-call duties to support production stability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and domain experts to bridge technical and business requirements.
- Align with cross-disciplinary teams (e.g., bioinformaticians) to deliver impactful solutions.
Requirements
Technical Skills
- Degree in Computer Science or a equivalent field (Bachelor’s or higher).
- 3+ years of hands-on Python backend development, with deep experience in:
- Django and Django REST Framework.
- Designing, building, and optimising RESTful APIs.
- Relational databases (MariaDB a strong plus).
- Proficiency in unit, integration, and functional testing (e.g., pytest, Django Test suite).
- Experience scaling systems and adopting cloud-native architectures (e.g., Google Cloud Platform).
- Knowledge of frontend frameworks (e.g., React) or infrastructure tools (e.g., Ansible, Bootstrap) is beneficial.

Soft Skills
- Excellent English comprehension/communication (written and verbal).
- Proven ability to collaborate in remote-first, agile environments.
- Passion for ** healthcare-tech**, genomics, or bioinformatics (preferred but not mandatory).
