About Us

Riverlane’s mission is to master quantum error correction (QEC) and unlock a new age of human progress. From advances in material and climate science, to complex chemistry simulation for new drug design, quantum computers will help humanity solve some of its most important challenges. But without QEC, the industry’s defining technical challenge, such breakthroughs can never be achieved. Riverlane is the world leader in QEC technology. QEC is a complex problem that requires a range of skills, talent and passion.

Having raised more than $125M in funding to date to accelerate our cutting-edge R&D in quantum error correction (QEC), Riverlane partners with many of the world’s leading quantum hardware providers and government agencies to make fault-tolerant quantum computing a reality. We’re making remarkable progress and growing fast.

About The Role

As a QEC Researcher (Quantum Simulation) at Riverlane, you will work on the development and application of classical simulation techniques for fault-tolerant quantum computing and quantum error correction.

The team brings together mathematicians, physicists, and chemists, and works closely with leading researchers in quantum algorithms and QEC. A core part of the role is contributing to the academic community through publications and conference participation.

This role focuses is enhancing and extending existing simulation tools to support the analysis, validation, and optimisation of quantum error-correction systems. This includes developing simulation capabilities for circuits dominated by Clifford operations, investigating the accuracy, complexity, and limitations of simulation approximations, and enabling large-scale studies of quantum error channels for non-Clifford QEC circuits and decoder performance.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Your work may include optimising quantum circuit compilation for specific QEC primitives, analyzing circuits for their effective error channels, and working to improve existing magic state preparation techniques in a hardware informed way.

You’ll collaborate closely with other QEC teams at Riverlane, including those working on logical operations, decoding and QEC code design across different qubit platforms.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and improve simulation tools for fault-tolerant quantum computing and quantum error correction.
  • Research and implement efficient simulation techniques for Clifford and near-Clifford quantum circuits.
  • Design and execute numerical studies to evaluate logical operations, decoder performance, and fault-tolerant protocols.
  • Engage in academic research activities, including reading and reviewing literature, participating in journal clubs, writing papers, and presenting work at conferences.
  • Write code to test scientific ideas and contribute to software-focused research outputs and products.
  • Lead or contribute to projects involving small, cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Collaborate with other teams across Riverlane to integrate your work with related research areas.
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners and collaborators in industry and academia.

What We Need

  • A PhD with strong academic performance in a mathematically focused discipline, such as physics, theoretical chemistry, mathematics or computer science.
  • Curiosity and motivation to learn new technical topics and apply your skills across quantum error correction and quantum algorithms.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, sharing progress clearly with colleagues, contributing to technical discussions and problem solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Even better if you have…

  • Experience working on quantum simulations, especially stabilizer tableau simulations and related techniques.
  • Experience designing and running numerical simulations.
  • Experience conducting research in quantum error correction, either in academia or industry.
