Qualified Children's Social Worker
Family Court Adviser (Children’s Social Worker) at Cafcass
We are offering a £6,000 ‘Professional Joining Incentive’ for successful applicants joining our teams in this area. For details about the scheme view the vacancy document.
Why This Role Matters
At Cafcass, we’re seeking Children’s Social Workers, also known as Family Court Advisers (FCAs), who share our dedication to shaping positive outcomes for children involved in private and public law family court proceedings. Our role is critical:
- We support children and young people by advocating for their wishes, feelings, and safety, ensuring their voices are heard in court.
- Working across Private Law (disagreements over child arrangements) and Public Law (cases raised by local authorities), we analyse risk, support mediation, and recommend lasting changes that parental decisions could overlook.
Unmatched in this field, we take great pride in our commitment to safe, supportive practice—continuously shaping a workplace where colleagues thrive.
What You’ll Do
As an FCA, your core responsibilities include:
- Conducting high-quality assessments, engaging directly with children to understand their experiences, wishes, and feelings, then representing them effectively in court.
- Using your expertise in risk assessment, mediation, and advocacy to influence decisions prioritising the child’s safety, well-being, and long-term needs.
- Collaborating with adults, local authorities, and diverse professionals to resolve complex issues and deliver positively shaped outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
