Job Summary
Probation Officer must undertake the full range of offender management tasks with people on probation under supervision, including assessment, sentence implementation, and producing reports. The role focuses on assessing and managing risk to protect victims and the public by:
- Providing professional advice and reports to courts, the Parole Board, and criminal justice agencies.
- Supervising individuals on probation under community orders, licences, and during custodial sentences.
- Working with external agencies, victims, and offenders to prevent crime and reduce reoffending.
- Adhering to confidentiality, equality, and safeguarding policies.
This role requires adherence to all PS (Probation Service) and HMPPS (Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service) policies while demonstrating a commitment to inclusion and protecting vulnerable groups.
Key Responsibilities
The postholder may undertake any combination of the following duties (or all):
Professional Assessment & Reporting
- Provide written reports to courts, the Parole Board, and agencies.
- Conduct risk assessments for offenders at all levels, including high and very high-risk cases.
Day-to-Day Work with Offenders
- Supervise community orders, outstanding licence conditions, and custodial releases.
- Manage risk-generated cases through regular engagement and monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with prescriptions, alcohol/drug testing, and welfare requirements.
Proper Referrals & Collaboration
- Facilitate efficient referrals to relevant agencies:
- Prison liaison teams
- Approved Premises
- Interventions (e.g., accredited programmes)
- MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement)
- MARAC (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference)
- Establish effective relationships with court teams, victim contact units, and external agencies.

Service Representation & Team Management
- Represent PS at professional forums, training events, and partnership meetings.
- Offer guidance and mentor Probation Services Officers (PSOs) where required.
- Ensure cover availability within and across teams as needed.
Programme Delivery & Pro-Social Modelling
- Deliver or co-lead accredited programmes suited to the offender’s risk level.
- Demonstrate pro-social behaviours by reinforcing positive attitudes and challenging anti-social behaviour.
Safeguarding & Legal Compliance
- Follow safeguarding children policies, assessing concerns raised.
- Adhere to data protection laws and sensitivity in handling confidential information.
Success Criteria
This role is not exhaustive—duties may expand to include additional responsibilities, subject to review.
To complete the role effectively, English language fluency (or formally specified Welsh) is required for spoken duties.
Person Specification
Qualifications
To be eligible, you must hold one of the following qualifications:
- PQF Honours Degree/Graduate Diploma in Probation, plus Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice.
- Diploma in Probation Studies, Diploma in Social Work (Probation pathway), or CQSW (Certified Qualification in Social Work, Probation option).
You are also expected to have:
- Substantial knowledge of the Criminal Justice System.
- Legislative understanding of relevant law and National Standards.
- Familiarity with Evidence-Based Practice methods (e.g., risk/needs assessment tools).
