Quality Analyst

Reporting to: GC Lead Location: Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk Hours: 40 hours per week

The Opportunity

The objective of this role involves performing full analysis of flavour and fragrance raw materials used in our Quality Control (QC) laboratory. Responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out classical wet analysis
  • Conducting instrumental analysis to assess profile acceptability
  • Providing organoleptic evaluations to ensure materials entering or leaving the site are fit for purpose

Responsibilities

Daily Tasks

  • Measure key physical parameters of flavour/fragrance raw materials, including:
    • Density
    • Refractive index
    • Optical rotation
    • Melting points and flash points

  • Conduct chemical analysis, such as:

    • Peroxide values
    • Acid values
    • Ester values
  • Perform instrumental analysis including:

    • UV spectroscopy
    • IR spectrometry
    • Tested compound chromatography Gas Chromatography (GC/Liquid Chromatography/GC-Mass Spec)
    • Essential oil analysis
    • Further substance-specific tests
  • Participate in organoleptic evaluations, including preparing tasting solutions and managing evaluations by senior staff or cross-functional teams.

  • Prepare reagents for routine and non-routine analysis, following high-standard protocols.

  • Undertake calibration and maintenance of lab equipment as per prescribed SOP.

  • Organize external analysis of samples when required, along with results collation.

  • Assist in sample reception to manage QC workflow and expedite analysis.

  • Conduct daily lab checks and maintenance, including:

    • Washing glassware when staffing is limited
    • Cleaning and storing** clean glassware
    • Emptying waste bins at shift-end
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in the QC department by:

    • Identifying efficiency and cost-cutting opportunities
    • Proposing operational effectiveness improvements

Larger-Role Tasks

  • Maintain chemical inventory for QC lab, placing orders as needed while liaising with technical departments regarding group purchasing strategies.
  • Ensure maintained clean and safe laboratory standards, reporting hazards to the Quality Control Manager.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or defects in practices to the manager.
  • Proactively monitor and report Health & Safety standards for all staff members.
  • Complete company-specific training and optional additional skill development programs geared at departmental efficiency.
  • Assist with broader lab activities, including shift coverage where necessary, to ensure unbroken service.

Requirements

  • A genuine passion for quality assurance in science-driven environments, prioritising a culture of innovation, teamwork, and dedication.
  • An undergraduate degree in a science-based discipline, preferably with chemistry modules as a must, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Treatt offers role-specific training, so pre-existing method proficiencies are not a pre-requisite.
