Contributing to the Future of Energy: Quality Engineer Role at UKAEA
The salary for this role is £57,117 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). While onsite working is expected for 3 days per week, the role actively supports flexible working requests.
This opportunity is available at the following site: 📍 Culham, Oxfordshire
Note: Employees will be required to complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including DBS and open-source data checks.
About the Role
Are you passionate about helping shape the future of clean, carbon-free energy through fusion technology? UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is leading the way, and we need a dedicated Quality Engineer to join our QSHE Risk and Assurance Directorate and drive quality excellence across our operations and projects.
You will:
- Enhance Quality Management System (QMS) processes across teams
- Lead quality assurance activities, including supplier audits and root cause analysis
- Develop and maintain QA/QC processes to ensure compliance with requirements
- Manage project quality activities, from planning to execution
- Monitor performance, resolve issues, and champion continuous improvement
- Deliver quality training and promote a culture of excellence
- Engage with internal/external stakeholders, suppliers, and partners globally
Key Responsibilities
Technical Governance & Quality Assurance
- Design, implement, and manage QA/QC processes to meet technical and regulatory standards
- Ensure all products, services, and activities comply with requirements

Project Quality Management
- Develop and execute quality plans aligned with project lifecycles
- Implement QMS best practices to support project success
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Analyze trends, identify improvement opportunities, and drive lean and 6 Sigma practices
- Carry out root cause analysis (FMEA, FTA, etc.) for non-conformance issues
Training, Compliance & Audits
- Deliver quality training programs to foster a positive QMS culture
- Conduct internal/external audits (ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001)
- Promote compliance with regulatory and industry standards
Stakeholder Engagement & Supplier Coordination
- Engage with internal teams, suppliers, and international partners
- Conduct surveillance and inspections at domestic and overseas sites
Requirements & Qualifications
To excel in this role, you should have: ✔ 3+ years of experience in QA/QC management within a regulated industrial engineering environment ✔ Deep knowledge of ISO9001, APQP/PPAP, and core QMS tools (Control Plans, FMEA, FTA, etc.) ✔ Experience in auditing processes (both internal systems and external suppliers) ✔ Qualification and practical experience in inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT) ✔ Degree (BSc/BA/HND) in Engineering or a related technical discipline ✔ McAhu, European or international QMS qualification would be advantageous ✔ Project management/lean/6 Sigma experience is highly valued
