Job Title: Quality Engineer

Location: Chelmsford

Job Type: Full-Time

Industry: Aerospace & Defence | Precision Machining

Reports To: Engineering Manager / Projects Manager

Company Overview:

As we expand our operations, we are seeking a motivated Quality Engineer to optimize manufacturing processes, drive continuous improvement, and ensure consistent delivery of high-quality parts.

Position Summary:

The Quality Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and defining the quality aspects of manufacturing processes for complex components used in aerospace and defence applications. This role involves close collaboration with production engineers, production teams, quality assurance, and customers to ensure processes are efficient, repeatable, and compliant with industry regulations and will provide evidence of compliance to APQP activities (e.g., AS9100/PPAP).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, document, and optimize validation of manufacturing processes for new and existing products.
  • Create and maintain process documentation including work instructions, PFMEA, and control plans.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams during product realisation to industrial validation (IV).
  • Select tooling, fixturing, and measuring equipment to improve quality and reduce cycle times.
  • Support the quality department by aiding root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions for process-related issues.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives using tools such as Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies.
  • Support PPAP and IV submissions in accordance with aerospace and defence standards and customer expectations.
  • Evaluate and introduce new manufacturing technologies and equipment where applicable.
  • Provide technical support to machinists and operators on the shop floor.
  • Ensure all processes comply with relevant industry standards and customer specifications.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Demonstrable experience in a manufacturing/quality engineering role preferably in a precision machining environment.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Experience with aerospace/defence quality standards (AS9100, ITAR, NADCAP).
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of CNC machining (3, 4, and 5-axis milling/turning) and tooling principles.
  • Familiarity with special processes (e.g., heat treatment, surface finishing, NDT).
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification.
  • Hands-on experience with quality inspection techniques.
