Senior Quality Inspector
Chelmsford | Precision Engineering / Aerospace Manufacturing
Hours: 4-day week, Monday to Thursday, 6am-4pm
Our client, a precision manufacturing business supplying high-mix components to demanding sectors including aerospace, is looking for a Senior Quality Inspector to join their factory quality function.
This is a technical authority role, going beyond routine inspection. You'll take ownership of complex inspections, advanced metrology, audit readiness, and quality problem-solving, while supporting and mentoring inspectors and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect complex products against drawings, specifications, and customer requirements
- Own First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) to AS9102 and customer standards
- Program and operate CMM inspections (PC-DMIS)
- Use handheld metrology and optical/3D scanning as needed
- Make conformity, containment, and release decisions on complex quality issues
- Lead non-conformance investigations, MRRs, root cause analysis, and CAPA
- Support 8D problem-solving for customer returns or escapes
- Take part in third-party and regulatory audits (ISO, CAA, FAA), representing the business with customers and suppliers
- Improve inspection methods, documentation, and quality processes
- Mentor Quality Inspectors and production teams

Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience as a Quality Inspector in precision engineering, ideally aerospace
- Advanced CMM programming and operation (PC-DMIS preferred)
- Strong interpretation of engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications
- Experience producing and maintaining FAIRs (VisualFAIR an advantage)
- Able to explain quality findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Sound judgement and strong problem-solving in quality decisions

- Formal qualifications in Engineering, Metrology, or Quality
- Experience with optical tracking or 3D scanning systems
- Machining and metals background
- Experience working directly with customers and suppliers on quality topics
