Step into a pivotal role where quality, governance, and technical assurance converge. As Quality Manager on a 6-month fixed-term contract, you will take ownership of a high-impact function within a UKAS-accredited environment, working at the forefront of compliance in a regulated technical sector. This is an opportunity to influence how quality is embedded across complex projects while collaborating with skilled professionals and regulatory bodies.


Purpose & Scope of the Role

The Quality Manager is responsible for:

  • The ongoing maintenance, oversight, and enhancement of the Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Ensuring full alignment with:
    • UKAS accreditation requirements
    • HSE guidance
    • Relevant ISO standards
  • Acting as the central technical governance hub, partnering with:
    • Surveyors
    • Analysts
    • Technical specialists
    • Senior leadership
  • Ensuring consistency, integrity, and compliance across all service delivery under:
    • ISO/IEC 17020 (Conformity Assessment – Inspection)
    • ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories)

Key Responsibilities: ✔ Oversight of competence, authorisation, and procedural adherence ✔ Management of audit projects, including UKAS Assessment Managers & HSE inspectors ✔ Reinforcing compliance credibility in client submissions and tenders to support business development


Your Impact in This Position

  • Strengthen the Quality Management System for compliance and audit readiness
  • Monitor process adherence and documentation integrity

Phase 2: Drive Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and enforce quality and operational efficiency enhancements
  • Implement data-driven decision making to refine processes

Phase 3: Shape Quality Strategy & Growth

  • Contribute to organisational growth through strong accreditation performance
  • Influence the future direction of compliance within the business

Core Capabilities Required

1. Quality & Compliance Management

  • Expertise in maintaining and evolving QMS aligned to ISO/IEC 17020 & 17025
  • Navigate regulatory frameworks, including:
    • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
    • HSG264 (Working with Asbestos)
  • Document control, governance, and risk assessment with meticulous precision
  • Balance compliance requirements with business objectives for robust quality assurance

2. UKAS & HSE Audit Management

  • Lead UKAS audits from preparation to conclusion
  • Act as primary point of contact for regulatory bodies
  • Manage audit findings with structured root cause analysis, implementing corrective actions
  • Maintain continuous audit readiness while fostering strong stakeholder relationships

3. Internal Auditing & Quality Control

  • Design and execute comprehensive internal audit projects, covering:
    • Field operations
    • Laboratory processes
    • Technical competence
  • Conduct site-based witnessed audits and desktop reviews
  • Identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Communicate insights clearly to senior leadership for informed decision-making

4. Proficiency Testing & Technical Assurance

  • Oversee technical assurance processes, ensuring:
    • High standards of accuracy and reliability
    • Profficiency testing schemes
    • Method validation
    • Equipment calibration
    • Measurement uncertainty frameworks
  • Align processes with accreditation scope and competence frameworks

5. Training, Competence & Improvement

  • Uphold training, qualifications, and CPD requirements
  • Mentor and develop a culture of accountability and quality
  • Proactively monitor regulatory changes, embedding updates for continuous improvement

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

✔ Proven experience in a UKAS-accredited asbestos consultancy or similar regulated technical environment ✔ In-depth knowledge of:

  • ISO/IEC 17020 & ISO/IEC 17025
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (COAR) and HSG264 ✔ BOHS certifications, with preference for:
  • P402 (Asbestos Sampling) / P403 (Air Monitoring) / P404 (Bulk Sampling)
  • (P405 desirable) ✔ Internal or Lead Auditor training highly desirable ✔ Demonstrated interest in professional development in quality management and compliance
