Quality Manager – Asbestos (6 month fixed term contract)

Quality Manager (Fixed Term 6 Month Contract)

Scope & Responsibilities

The Quality Manager will take ownership of a high-impact function within a UKAS-accredited environment, working at the forefront of compliance in a regulated technical sector. This role shapes quality embedding across complex projects, collaborates with technical specialists and regulatory bodies, and influences industry-leading standards.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

  • Oversight of the Quality Management System, ensuring full alignment with:
    • UKAS accreditation requirements
    • HSE guidance
    • Relevant ISO/IEC 17020 & ISO/IEC 17025 standards
  • Organisational-wide responsibility across:
    • Surveying
    • Air monitoring
    • Laboratory analysis
  • Technical governance partnership with:
    • UKAS surveyors
    • analysts
    • technical specialists
    • senior leadership
  • Management of competence, authorisation, and procedural adherence
  • Audit project coordination, including interaction with:
    • UKAS Assessment Managers
    • HSE inspectors
  • Support for business development by ensuring compliance credibility in client submissions and tenders

Impact in This Position

In early stages:

  • Establish control and visibility of the Quality Management System
  • Enhance compliance readiness with consistent audit preparation

As the role embeds:

  • Drive continuous improvement in service quality, operational efficiency, and technical performance
  • Develop quality strategy contributing to:
    • Accreditation performance
    • organisational growth

Exposure to high-value, complex projects with regulatory engagement, positioning the role as a key driver of industry standards.

Quality & Compliance Management

  • Maintain and evolve Quality Management Systems in line with:
    • ISO/IEC 17020 & ISO/IEC 17025
    • UKAS compliance frameworks
    • HSE guidance (Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 & HSG264)
  • Balance compliance with business objectives for effective quality assurance

UKAS & HSE Audit Management

  • Lead UKAS audit preparation and aftermath from initial planning to successful conclusion
  • Act as key stakeholder liaison with UKAS and HSE inspectors
  • Interpret audit findings, apply root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions

Internal Auditing & Quality Control

  • Design and deliver internal audit projects covering:
    • Field operations
    • Laboratory processes
    • Technical competence
  • Conduct on-site witnessed audits and desktop reviews, identifying trends and improvement opportunities

Proficiency Testing & Technical Assurance

  • Oversee performance validation, including:
    • Method validation
    • Equipment calibration
    • Measurement uncertainty control
  • Align systems with accreditation scope through ongoing competence framework reviews

Training, Competence & Improvement

  • Ensure training, qualifications, and CPD requirements are met
  • Mentor staff to foster a culture of accountability and quality accountability
  • Monitor regulatory change and embed updates in systems and processes

Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in:
    • UKAS-accredited asbestos consultancies
    • Quality management within ISO/IEC 17020 & ISO/IEC 17025 frameworks
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Asbestos-related regs (Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, HSG264)
    • BOHS certifications (highly desirable: P402, P403, P404; valuable: P405)
  • Audit experience:
    • Internal/Lead Auditor training (highly desirable)
    • Consistent professional development in quality management
  • Additional qualifications (beneficial): ISO 9001 Lead Auditor

Working Environment

  • Flexible hybrid model:
    • Office-based collaboration
