About the Team

The Search and AI Platform is Elsevier’s agentic data platform, which powers products such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, and next-generation AI-powered search systems. The platform uses agentic services to interrogate rich knowledge graphs, search and recommendation systems, and unparalleled research data collections. This enables the scientific community to:

  • Deliver quality research more quickly

About the Role

We are looking for a Quality Test Engineer to join the Search and AI Platform team. This is a hands-on, automation-first role focused on API and service-level testing, with quality embedded throughout the development lifecycle.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with software engineers, quality engineers, and technical leads
  • Ensuring search and retrieval services are reliable, scalable, and safe for downstream product teams
  • Analyzing complex systems, contributing to engineering discussions, and taking ownership of quality outcomes across assigned areas of the platform

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement automated test suites for APIs and backend services, prioritizing:
    • Karate
    • Cucumber with RestAssured
  • Write clean, maintainable, and reliable automated tests in Java that provide fast and accurate feedback
  • Validate functional and non-functional behaviors, including:
    • Error handling
    • Reliability
    • Service interactions
  • Contribute to contract testing and service-level testing strategies for REST and evolving GraphQL APIs
  • Integrate and maintain automated tests within CI/CD pipelines, supporting multi-level stack testing
  • Use observability tooling such as New Relic and logging for:
    • Diagnosis
    • Monitoring
    • Quality analysis
  • Technically analyze problems and proposed solutions while considering:
    • Right level of detail
    • Appropriate engineering discussions
  • Participate in incident reviews and post-mortems, improving test coverage to prevent recurring issues
  • Collaborate with engineers early in the development process to:
    • Shape acceptance criteria
    • Surface edge cases
    • Enhance testability

Requirements

  • Quality engineer with solid hands-on automation experience, emphasizing engineering discipline (quality built-in vs. validated at the end)
  • Collaborative and autonomous, with confidence in technical discussions and ownership of workload
  • Proven track record in software testing or quality engineering (minimum good experience)
  • Strong expertise in API testing and/or contract testing, including:
    • Service interactions
    • Data formats
  • Proficient in Java coding and scripting
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Karate
    • Cucumber (with RestAssured)
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (contributing to testing at various levels of the stack)
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (e.g., New Relic or logging)
  • Ability to technically dissect problems and solutions, adapting detail/abstraction to drive discussions
  • Commitment to continuous improvement of quality outcomes for assigned areas
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum teams

Nice to Have

  • Performance testing experience
  • GraphQL API familiarity
  • Service-level or contract testing experience
  • Experience with shared services or internal platforms
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes (EKS)
  • Interest in search/AI/data-oriented systems

Base Pay Range: Γ€71,700 – €119,600 (for roles based in Amsterdam, Netherlands), subject to collective labor agreements.
