Kick-start your career with Sheriff Construction as a Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprentice

Earn while you learn, attending London South Bank University (or similar University providing the same course) one day a week while gaining hands-on experience on live construction projects.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Supporting Quantity Surveyors with the commercial management of live projects.
  • Measuring works from drawings and specifications.
  • Preparing quotations, estimates and cost plans.
  • Assisting with procurement of materials and subcontractors.
  • Supporting valuations, variations and final accounts.
  • Attending site visits and client meetings.
  • Developing an understanding of our specialist trade.
  • Completing university coursework alongside practical training.

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Be able to apply and evaluate the principles for the avoidance of conflict and dispute resolution such as adjudication and arbitration between project stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Analyse costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives on a project
  • Be able to advise on the legal aspects of a project and the most suitable form of contract to be used to ensure fairness and efficiency
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable construction solutions that maximise value for clients and enhance the cost effectiveness of the project within the budget constraints
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable procurement routes and manage and report on the tendering and negotiation processes to select specialist contractors
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement of completed works and issue documentation required for payment to specialist contractors and income from client
  • Advise construction team and the client on strategies to control predicted expenditure in line with the budget
  • Carry out risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risk
  • Monitor, report and advise construction team on project cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on financial implications of decisions during the construction phase
  • Assess, interpret and report on progress and assist in the control of programmes during the construction phase

Other requirements

  • A Levels (or equivalent) that meet the entry requirements for the Degree Apprenticeship
  • A genuine interest in the construction industry or the built environment.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
  • Previous work experience, work shadowing or volunteering (in any setting) demonstrating reliability and commitment.
  • A full UK driving licence or currently learning to drive (if travel to sites will be required).
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • An interest in pursuing professional membership with RICS in the future.
