Quantity Surveyor - Hitchin, Hertfordshire


Summary

  • Salary: £65,000 - £75,000 per annum + package
  • Type: Full Time
  • Location: Office based near Hitchin, Bedfordshire (with site visits across London / South East)
  • Urgent Requirement: Yes – candidates on short notice or immediately available preferred

About the Role

An established specialist contractor (specialising in M&E) is seeking a Quantity Surveyor with a few years of experience to join their growing commercial team during a recent transition.

This role offers:

  • Ownership & accountability – move beyond support work and shape commercial delivery
  • Broad exposure across projects (no siloed/repetitive tasks)
  • Mentorship from an experienced Commercial Lead to accelerate progression
  • Direct influence – minimal politics; surrounded by collaboration, not bureaucracy

The right candidate could progress quickly to project lead-level responsibility, with a visible impact on commercial outcomes.

Target Salary: Up to £75,000 for those ready to deliver high accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage commercial aspects of projects from start-to-finish, ensuring cost control and financial integrity
  • Develop autonomy while collaborating closely with the Commercial Lead
  • Handle valuations, variations, final accounts, and procurement of subcontractors
  • Track project performance, flagging commercial risks and ensuring risk mitigation
  • Demonstrate strong numerical accuracy and clear communication skills with key stakeholders

What We’re Looking For

Essential Requirements:

  • Solid foundation in Quantity Surveying – strong experience in:
    • Cost control, budgeting, and reporting
    • Hands-on valuations, variations, and final accounts
    • Subcontractor procurement and management
    • Contract administration
    • Performance tracking and risk assessment
  • Confidence in numbers with precision, alongside the ability to clearly articulate findings
  • Commitment to progression and increased responsibility

Ideally:

  • £20,000+ in/salary expectations.
  • Relevant M&E experience (desirable, but not essential)
