Quantity Surveyor
Position: Quantity Surveyor Business Department: Bethell Construction Available Positions: 3 Location: Greater Manchester
The Role
We are seeking a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor to deliver contractual and commercial excellence across projects from pre-construction to completion. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring:
- Value maximisation
- Risk mitigation
- Cash flow maintenance
- Alignment with strategic and operational goals
- Compliance with commercial procedures and reporting
Working collaboratively with commercial, operational, finance, and support teams, your responsibilities include:
- Ensuring target achievement and deadline adherence
- Managing procurement deliverables through supply chain communication and analysis
- Leading subcontract management
- Liaising with clients and stakeholders to drive optimal commercial outcomes
- Mentoring junior professionals while upholding high team standards
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Wellbeing
- Maintain full HSQE compliance on site and in the office
- Identify hazards and manage risks effectively
- Ensure supply chain adherence to company and client safety standards
- Promote a culture of wellbeing, safety, and inclusion
Client & Commercial Management
- Build strong client and operational team relationships
- Provide timely, accurate commercial insights for decision-making
- Foster supply chain partnerships to secure best-value outcomes
- Proactively manage final account agreements and client expectations

Leadership & Team Development
- Mentor graduates and junior Quantity Surveyors
- Foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and innovation
- Communicate risks and progress clearly to senior leadership
Commercial Excellence
- Adhere to approved commercial processes
- Manage cost reports, subcontract procurement, and contract administration (pre- and post-signing)
- Develop strong working relationships with estimating, operations, and procurement
- Prioritise tasks and balance competing demands efficiently
Sustainability & Performance
- Optimise resource utilisation and cost management systems
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement through change control
- Contribute to budget development, procurement strategy, and commercial targets
About You
Qualifications & Experience
- CSCS accredited
- Degree in Quantity Surveying or 10+ years’ relevant experience
- Professional membership (e.g., RICS, CICES, ICE) – desirable
- Strong background in financial and commercial management
- Experience across civils, drainage, groundworks, concreting, and highways (projects up to £20m)
- Full UK driving licence
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Commercial acumen—maximise value and manage cash flow
- Deep understanding of construction and highways infrastructure
- Cost forecasting, reporting, and contract administration expertise
- Proficiency in JCT, NEC, and ICE contracts
- Familiarity with insurance requirements (warranties, bonds, PCGs)
- Project/Primavera or equivalent software knowledge
- Strong grasp of H&S practices and tender processes
- Ability to analyse project data and drawings (quantitative and systems-based)
- Negotiation, stakeholder management, and communication skills (verbal & written)
- Knowledge of measurement standards (MCHW, CESMM4, SSM7)
