Role Summary
Central Services is a newly formed team dedicated to delivering safe, effective, and professional maintenance and engineering services across Anglian Water. As a Quantity Surveyor within Central Services, you will play a pivotal role in providing commercial assurance and financial control across a high volume of lower-value Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) projects, primarily during the pre-construction phase. These projects vary in complexity, with most falling under low to medium CDM risk categories.
You will work closely with project managers, engineers, and contractors to ensure projects meet stakeholder expectations while maintaining financial efficiency and contractual compliance. The role is integral to embedding commercial assurance, ensuring robust governance, value for money, and contract compliance across all areas of delivery. You will also contribute to the development of a self-delivery operational maintenance capability, focused on minor building works and mechanical and electrical projects, to enhance agility, quality, and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate cost estimates and manage project budgets throughout the lifecycle.
- Prepare and evaluate tenders, contracts, budgets, bills of quantities, and other commercial documentation.
- Monitor project progress, manage cost variations, and deliver timely financial reporting.
- Administer various forms of contracts, ensuring full compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Identify and mitigate commercial risks to protect project outcomes and business interests.
- Support the Commercial Manager and Senior Commercial Manager in the resolution of contractual and financial disputes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
