Position Overview

We are seeking a reliable, hardworking Quarry Operative to join our quarrying team at Shap Blue Quarry & Asphalt Plant, Cumbria.

In this hands-on, practical role, you will:

  • Assist in the extraction, processing, and handling of aggregates to meet production targets.
  • Operate heavy plant and equipment while adhering to stringent health, safety, and environmental standards.

This role is ideal for someone equipped with mechanical aptitude, teamwork skills, and the desire to work outdoors in a fast-paced, industrial setting.


Key Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Duties

  • Operate mobile and fixed plant (e.g. dump trucks, loading shovels, crushers, screeners) safely and efficiently.
  • Assist in the extraction, crushing, and processing of raw materials.
  • Perform routine checks, cleaning, and basic maintenance on machinery.
  • Safely load and unload materials for transportation or further processing.
  • Follow daily work schedules and production instructions from supervisors.
  • Conduct regular safety checks, then report any hazards, defects, or incidents.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential Requirements

  • Proven competence in operating plant or machinery (such as a loading shovel, excavator, or dumper truck). CPCS or MPQC card highly desirable.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to perform simple maintenance tasks.
  • Firm grasp of health and safety practices, with a commitment to following procedures.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Safety-conscious attitude with a responsible work ethic.
  • Readiness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Reliability, accountability, and self-motivation in a busy environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to various tasks and shift patterns.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous experience in quarrying, construction, mining, or a heavy industrial role.
  • MPQC accreditation or NVQ Level 2 in Extractives Operations.
  • Additional training in First Aid or health & safety (e.g. IOSH Working Safely).
