About the Role
This is a groundbreaking opportunity to lead a high-stakes warehouse operation, directly supporting vulnerable residents across Southend. You will:
- Lead and motivate a dedicated team to ensure safe, efficient, and timely delivery of essential equipment.
- Drive continuous improvement in service standards.
Southend-on-Sea City Council is seeking an experienced and proactive Warehouse Lead to take charge of a critical function within our Equipment Service—a full-time, permanent role.
Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership
- Oversee day-to-day warehouse operations, ensuring alignment with service priorities.
- Maintain impeccable organisation, compliance, and efficiency across the team.

Safety & Compliance
- Lead on health and safety, ensuring rigorous adherence to:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), and manual handling regulations.
- Foster a safety-first culture—** Mandatory safe working practices and risk assessments.
- Take full ownership of high-risk storage areas and ensure COSHH-compliant handling, monitoring, and documentation of hazardous materials.
- Lead on health and safety, ensuring rigorous adherence to:

Team Development & Management
- Supervise and develop staff through regular check-ins, performance reviews, and tailored training.
- Support all team members—including temporary workers—to achieve operational excellence.

Inventory & Equipment Optimisation
- Maintain high standards in warehouse equipment care.
- Maximise stock utilisation and oversee the end-to-end equipment return process—ensuring collection, refurbishment, and restocking.

Operational Excellence
- Drive continuous improvement in storage, retrieval, and service delivery.
- Ensure compliance with logistics, supply chain, and facility standards.
This role blends hands-on leadership with operational strategy—perfect for those passionate about making a meaningful impact on service delivery.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
To thrive in this position, you must have:
- Proven experience in warehouse, logistics, or supply chain supervision/management, with expertise in:
- Allocation of work, performance monitoring, and team development.
- Health and safety compliance—experience with legislation, risk assessments, and incident reporting.
- Strong operational knowledge of:
- Logistics distribution, warehousing, and stock movement.
- Fundamental processes (e.g., loading/unloading, manual handling).
- Forklift training expertise—confidence in leading new operator training and ensuring safe equipment use.
- Physical capability for a challenging, fast-paced environment—ability to lift, bend, stand, and walk for extended periods.

Mandatory Qualification Requirements
Your application will not be considered without the following:
- Valid forklift truck licence or equivalent
- GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/Level 4 or above)
- Formal qualification in logistics, supply chain, or health and safety.
