Logistics Lead – Equipment Service Team
Location: Southend-on-Sea City Council (Office-based) Type: Permanent, Full-time

About the Role
Southend-on-Sea City Council seeks an **experienced and proactive Logistics Lead to join the Equipment Service team on a full-time, permanent basis. This key operational leadership role oversees daily logistics, ensuring timely, safe, and customer-focused delivery, collection, and exchange of essential equipment across the city.
Core Duties
- Partner with the Equipment Service Team Manager and other leads to coordinate operations, address challenges, and drive continuous improvement for high-quality service delivery to residents.
- Lead the Logistics Team and Administration Team, including:
- Managing rotas, leave, and cover
- Conducting 1:1 meetings and performance reviews
- Supporting staff development
- Addressing conduct or capability matters
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and promote safe working practices.
- Oversee deliveries, collections, exchanges (including urgent same-day requests), and route planning to optimise workload efficiency and meet service standards.
- Lead service improvement using performance data/operational insights to identify trends and implement solutions.
- Investigate and resolve logistics-related complaints, emphasising a customer-focused approach to service quality.

Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead and coordinate logistics functions:
- Supervise drivers, technicians, and staff
- Manage relationships with administrative/frontline colleagues
- Ensure daily connectivity with delivery partners, customers, and teams
Team Management
- Manage multidisciplinary teams with experience in logistics, warehouse, delivery, technical, administrative, and customer support functions
- Root Cause Analysis: Solve operational challenges through evidence-based, pragmatic approaches
- Support Operational Excellence: Apply best practices for routing, resource scheduling, and urgent task prioritisation.
Key Processes
- Routes/Resource optimization to balance timeliness, cost, and efficiency.
- Handling complaints/issues, focusing on resident satisfaction and service recovery.
- Safety and compliance: Knowledgeable in Health and Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling Regulations, and LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations).
Requirements
To take ownership of this critical role, candidates must demonstrate:
- Proven experience in logistics/transport/operational leadership, including supervisory skills across diverse teams.
- Operations Strategy: Experience managing full-service value chains (deliveries, collections, handling, recycling, and support).
- Hands-on expertise in:
- Route planning
- Workload prioritisation and scheduling
- Rapid response to time-sensitive requests
- People Management: Confident in motivating, coaching, and performance-managing teams.
- Strategic Problem-Solving: Ability to use performance metrics to identify and act on inefficiencies.
- Minimum requirements:
- GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above) – essential.
- Desirable: A relevant qualification in business, supply chain, or logistics.
