Radio Frequency Engineers
Principal / Lead / Senior RF Engineer
Location: County Durham or Cambridge
The Opportunity
We are seeking experienced Senior, Principal RF Engineers to join a growing engineering team at a modern, state-of-the-art development and manufacturing facility in County Durham or Cambridge.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of cutting-edge telecommunications, defence, space and critical communications products, taking concepts through design, development, verification, and production. Depending on experience and seniority, successful candidates will contribute as technical specialists, project leads, or senior technical authorities, supporting the development of innovative RF and mmWave solutions while helping shape engineering best practices across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
RF & mmWave Design
- Design, simulate, and develop RF and mmWave circuits, components, modules, and subsystems.
- Take ownership of RF specifications, architecture, design, implementation, and verification activities.
- Conduct RF system analysis, including:
- System line-up analysis
- Gain and noise budgeting
- Tolerance and yield analysis
- Performance optimisation
- Design and develop amplifiers, filters, transceivers, and integrated RF subsystems.
- Select and evaluate RF components, ICs, and MMICs.
- Support technology development and innovation initiatives.
Testing & Validation
- Carry out RF measurements, characterisation, and validation of prototypes and production hardware.
- Develop test plans, procedures, and verification strategies.
- Analyse test results and support design optimisation.
- Investigate and resolve technical issues through effective troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Support reliability testing and product qualification activities.

Product Development & Manufacturing
- Support products through the full lifecycle from concept through prototyping to volume production.
- Ensure designs meet performance, cost, quality, and manufacturability targets.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and process engineering teams to optimise yield and production performance.
- Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles throughout the development process.
- Support problem-solving and fault diagnosis during product introduction and production.
Technical Leadership
- Lead technical activities across projects and programmes.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to engineers within the team.
- Support the development and implementation of engineering best practices.
- Lead and participate in design reviews, technical audits, and peer reviews.
- Identify, assess, and manage technical risks.
Project & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with project managers to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
- Collaborate with electronics, mechanical, PCB layout, software, systems, manufacturing, and test engineers.
- Support customer discussions, technical proposals, and RFQs where required.
- Present technical work, findings, and project updates to internal and external stakeholders.
Documentation
- Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including:
- Design reports
- Design logbooks
- Test specifications and reports
- Engineering data packs
- Design release documentation
- Ensure engineering records are maintained to a high professional standard.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in RF, Microwave, Electronics, Communications Engineering, or a related field.
- Significant experience in RF and/or mmWave circuit and system design.
- Strong knowledge of:
- RF and microwave engineering principles
- System line-up analysis
- Tolerance and yield analysis
- Design for manufacture
- RF measurement and test techniques
- Experience using RF design and simulation tools such as:
- ADS
- Microwave Office
- CST Studio Suite
- EMPro
- Or equivalent tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience in telecommunications, aerospace, defence, space, or critical communications industries.
- Experience designing:
- RF amplifiers
- Filters
- Transceivers
- RF modules and subsystems
- Experience supporting products from concept through to high-volume manufacture.
- Previous technical leadership or mentoring experience.
- Experience supporting customer-facing technical discussions and bids.
