R&D Mechanical Engineer, Associate
Core Technology (CTG) Engineer – Arbroath, Angus

Job Duties
-associated role in Arbroath, Angus Halliburton’s team in Arbroath is recruiting for a Core Technology (CTG) Engineer, an entry-to-mid level associate position ideal for recent graduates (planned 2026 graduates) or professionals with 1–2 years of industry experience. Exceptional candidates may also be considered for more senior development pathways.
Primary Responsibilities
As a CTG Engineer, you will:
- Design, develop, and customise completion tools by:
- Setting up or modifying bespoke designs.
- Processing ECN (Engineering Change Notice) changes.
- Providing technical insights to manufacturing teams and field representatives.
- Identifying and implementing design optimisations and process improvements.
- Support frontend and mid-term projects with:
- Project management, balancing multiple short-to-mid(length) assignments.
- Collating technical data for engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, QA) to ensure on-time delivery and technical excellence.

Key Skills & Qualifications
Required
- Recent or upcoming undergraduate degree in a Mechanical or related engineering discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- Strong interest in engineering optimisation, adhered to international standards like API 11D1 and API 19V.
- Familiarity with engineering calculations (e.g., pressure vessel theory, tensile loading, thread shear analysis, geometric tolerance stack-ups).
- Ability to produce engineering drawings and 3D CAD models (solid modelling skills a plus).
- Basic experience with functional specifications, Pareto breakdowns and reconciliation of technical requirements.
- Full workplace risk management awareness (hallmarked by Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) cooperation).
Preferred
✅ Software proficiency in:
- SolidWorks (3D modelling)
- Mathcad (engineering computations)
- PLM/PDM systems (product data management)
✅ Collaboration:
- Understanding of downhole completion tool design and application lifecycle.
- Proactive approach to IP discovery under guidance – identifying novel (IP-triggered) improvements while managing confidentiality.

- Attention to detail: Precision in documentation, calculations, and cross-mediaries (e.g., matching finished product tests to functional specifications).
- Functional autonomy: Under graduated supervision, read functional specs to engineer hardware changes or new designs.
- Disciplined manual/manuals usage: Ensure design controls, engineering certifications and tool compliance.
- Cross-functional interaction: Engage with various specialisations (mentors, HSE offices, R&D teams) to decrease learning curve for novel tasks.

Standardisation & Process Adherence
Release maps, inventory transfer standards and “informational” project engineering will be both documented and consulted – with hands-on mentorship for design workflows.
